The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has been engaged on two fire fronts in the state, containing a fire incident involving a gas laden tanker at Ola Farm Bus Stop, along Abaranje Road in Ikotun, while also responding to a fire outbreak that gutted a branch of Justrite Superstore along Akowonjo Road in the Egbeda/Alimosho area.
The Ikotun incident, which happened earlier today, caused temporary inconvenience to members of the community, and has since been arrested by the Response Team of LASEMA.
According to a statement by the Head, Public Affairs LASEMA, Afolabi Olawale, on behalf of the agency’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke Osanyintolu, the Response Team met the tanker engulfed in flames when it got to the scene of the incident.
Initial findings, according to the statement, revealed that the vehicle was travelling at speed when it struck a road bump. The impact caused the driver to lose control, which led to a tyre burst and an immediate fire outbreak.
LASEMA, working in close coordination with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, moved in, suppressed the fire, secured the perimeter, and prevented any escalation that could have threatened nearby homes, businesses and road users.
The statement added that the operation was supported by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the Federal Road Safety Corps and officers of the Nigeria Police from Ikotun Division, who managed crowd control and traffic diversion to ensure safety and order at the scene.
“The situation has been brought under control and the fire fully extinguished. Efforts are now focused on the safe evacuation of the affected tanker from the roadway. To achieve this, LASEMA has deployed heavy duty equipment to lift and remove the vehicle to restore normal traffic flow in the area. The operation remains ongoing,” Oke Osanyintolu said.
In the second incident, a fire outbreak has gutted a branch of Justrite Superstore along Akowonjo Road in the Egbeda/Alimosho area of Lagos State, destroying goods and property estimated to be worth millions of naira.
Emergency teams from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and LASEMA were promptly deployed to the scene, where they are working to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), which confirmed the incident via a post on X, disclosed that the fire occurred at the popular retail outlet near Jimoh Bus Stop.
The agency noted that emergency responders were already on ground making efforts to put out the inferno. LASTMA also urged residents and motorists to steer clear of the Akowonjo and Egbeda axis to allow for smooth emergency operations. It added that traffic diversions have been put in place, with motorists advised to expect congestion along Akowonjo Road and adjoining routes.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the fire significantly impacted the supermarket’s electronics section located on the upper floor, as thick smoke was seen billowing from the building.
As of the time of filing this report, there is no official confirmation of casualties in the Egbeda fire, while the cause remains unknown. Authorities say an assessment of the total damage will be carried out after the situation is brought under control.
