The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has honored Engr. Memunat Ayodolapo Bello, FNSE, with its prestigious Fellowship Award in recognition of her contributions to the engineering profession, Isqil Najim writes.
This award was given at a ceremony held at the Los Angeles Event Center, Jahi, Abuja, where 261 accomplished engineers were honoured. It brought together a distinguished personalities across the country to celebrate the engineers’ elevation to the Society’s highest professional rank.
The President and Chairman-in-Council of the NSE, Engr. Margaret Aina Oguntala, FNSE, presided over the event.
Addressing the new Fellows, Engr. Oguntala, the NSE President, described the event as the “celebration of distinction, achievement, and responsibility.” She urged the new Fellows to uphold high standards of professionalism and integrity.
Engr. Bello’s journey to this auspicious moment highlights her dedication and pursuit of knowledge. She started her career with a Higher National Diploma in Civil Engineering from the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro. She continued her education with a Postgraduate Diploma (Upper Credit) in Civil Engineering (Structures) from the Federal University of Technology Akure, and a Master’s degree (Merit) in Construction Project Management from The University of The West of England, Bristol, UK.
Her commitment to learning took her to Canada, where she earned a Human Resources Management Graduate Certificate with Distinction from Georgian College, Barrie, in 2024. This background, along with an Honorary Doctorate in Leadership, underpins her significant impact on the sector.
She has also attended various training courses, including those in Technical Report Writing, Construction Materials Testing, Health, Safety & Environment, Office Project, and Sustainable & Green Building.
A COREN Registered Engineer, Engr. Bello is involved with the engineering community activities. She is a member of The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the Nigerian Institution of Highway & Transportation Engineers (NIHTE), the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers (NICE), the Nigerian Institution of Safety Engineers (NISafetyE), The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), The Society of Women Engineers, USA (SWE), and the Project Management Institute, Canada (PMI).
Bello currently serves as the General Secretary of APWEN Lagos, after previously holding the position of Assistant General Secretary. She has also served the NSE Lagos branch as Assistant Technical Secretary and Financial Secretary, while continued to uphold the professional ethics she values.
As a Civil Engineer and Project Manager, she holds executive roles as a Director in Aron Nigeria Ltd and Project Director in Dynamic View Ltd. Her work includes supervising and executing numerous projects, such as the 8-floor corporate head office for Soatec Engineering Service in GRA Ikeja, the Mike Ade Tower, and the Nigerian Police Force Administrative Block in Ibeju Lekki.
Her expertise has also made a difference in delivering infrastructure like the Divine Mercy Specialist Hospital in Ijede Ikorodu, the rehabilitation of Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos, and the construction of educational facilities including the School of Business Studies & Management Studies at Yaba College of Technology, and the School of Technical Education in Epe, among other completed projects. She also oversaw the construction of Sagamu stadium and the NYSC orientation Camp in Sagamu.
Mrs. Bello has contributed to the profession through her writings and presentations, with papers on topics such as Building Collapse in Nigeria (Lagos State as a case study), Engineering & Character, Building Collapse: Causes & Solutions, Project Management Skills, and Project Monitoring and Evaluation.
Engr. Bello’s elevation to Fellowship is an icing on the cake following many years of dedication to excellence and commitment to engineering. Her professional journey is an inspiring story of resilience, ambition, continuous learning, from polytechnics to universities, and developing her skills both in Nigeria and abroad. It also makes her a shining example for aspiring engineers, especially women. She has demonstrated that with passion and perseverance, one can achieve remarkable things and leave a lasting impact on the world.
Engr. Memunat Ayodolapo Bello is happily married to the Immediate Past Chairman of NSE Lagos Branch, Engr. Adekunle Bello, FNSE. They are blessed with a son, Dr. Nurudeen Adeniyi Bello.
