The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has officially approved the registration of 2,672 engineering practitioners across various cadres and 118 corporate entities, including engineering firms and training providers.
This move significantly expands the national database of qualified engineering professionals and corporate bodies under the Engineers (Registration, etc.) (Amendment) Act No. 3 of 2018.
The latest cycle of approvals covers a broad spectrum of the engineering workforce:
Engineering Personnel (2,672 total): Comprising 2,068 Engineers, 356 Engineering Technologists, 208 Engineering Craftsmen, 21 Engineering Technicians, and 3 Expatriate Engineering Practitioners.
Engineering Firms (118 total): This includes 85 general engineering firms, 30 consulting firms, and 3 newly accredited National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF) Engineering Skills Training Providers.
Beyond the registration of new members, COREN Registrar, Professor Okorie Austin Uche, speaking after the 188th Ordinary Council Meeting held in the first quarter of 2026, revealed that the Council has approved an international engagement strategy. In collaboration with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), COREN will apply for:
- Full Signatory Status under the Washington Accord. (It current has been granted provisional status)
- Provisional Status under the Sydney and Dublin Accords.
To align with these international frameworks, specialized units will be established within the Engineering Education and Accreditation Department to ensure Nigerian engineering qualifications meet the standards of the International Engineering Alliance (IEA).
The Council also endorsed a draft Amendment Bill to the COREN Act, which introduces stringent measures to protect the public and enhance professionalism:
- The use of sub-standard materials or unauthorized alterations to approved designs during construction is now categorized as a criminal offense.
- Engineering infrastructure must now be insured to guarantee compensation in cases of injury or death arising from failure.
- The Engineering Regulation and Monitoring Enforcement (ERME) will now cover multiple sectors of the economy to ensure total compliance.

New Registrant Checklist: Finalizing Your License
If your name appears on the approved list, follow these steps to secure your practicing license:
- Acceptance: Log into the and accept the congratulatory message.
- Fee Payment: Process the ₦68,000 registration/induction fee (note: fees vary for Craftsmen and Technicians).
- Payment Verification: If the status shows “Pending,” go to the , enter your RRR, and click verify until it displays “SUCCESSFUL.”
- Profile Activation: Once your status reaches 100% Complete, your COREN registration number (starting with R) will be generated and sent via email.
- Download License: Log in as a “PRACTITIONER” using your new R-number as the username and your existing password to download your e-license.
