COREN Opens New Paths for Engineering Technologist Registration

The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), has announced new pathways for individuals seeking to register as Engineering Technologists through the Nigerian Association of Technologists in Engineering (NATE).

The decision, ratified during recent Council Regulation Meetings, aims to broaden access to the profession for a wider range of qualified individuals.

Previously, aspiring Engineering Technologists typically required a COREN-accredited Higher National Diploma (HND), B.Sc in Engineering or an equivalent qualification, alongside a minimum of three years of post-qualification professional experience and successful completion of COREN’s Professional Examination.

Following a proposal from the Nigerian Association of Technologists in Engineering (NATE), COREN has now approved five additional qualifications for a route to registration:

1. BSc. Tech. Ed
2. B. Tech. Ed
3. Advanced Diploma
4. Higher Technical Diploma
5. Higher Technical Certificates

These newly approved qualifications represent a range of academic and technical credentials, including bachelor’s degrees focused on technical education, advanced diplomas, and higher technical certificates. Their inclusion is designed to recognize diverse educational backgrounds that equip individuals with the necessary knowledge and skills to contribute to the engineering sector.

Under the new framework, NATE can admit holders of these qualifications as Corporate Members. Subsequently, COREN will register them as Engineering Technologists through an absorption process, provided they have accumulated four years of post-qualification experience.

However, Engr. Wech. Andrew Francis Onyilo, Head of the Council Secretariat Unit, clarified that “this approval does not grant automatic progression to higher Engineering Cadres; each case must undergo due screening by the Special Cases Committee for progression.”

The new routes received final ratification at the 185th Ordinary meeting of the Council, with immediate implementation by NATE and COREN. This development is expected to further bolster Nigeria’s engineering workforce and promote professional standards within the sector.
