Abuja, Nigeria — The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has kicked off its 34th Engineering Assembly, a three-day event bringing together engineers, policymakers and stakeholders from across the country to deliberate on public safety and professional regulation in the engineering sector.
The assembly, which runs from Monday 13th to Wednesday 15th July 2026, is being held at The Velodrome, Constitution Avenue, Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, under the theme “Advancing Public Safety in Nigeria through Strategic Engineering Regulation, Enforcement, and a Tiered Sanctioning Regime.”
Proceedings began on Monday with registration and collection of conference materials, followed in the evening by a Presidential Cocktail Party held strictly by invitation.
The official Opening Ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, 14th July, chaired by Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Founder, President and CEO of the Dangote Group. The ceremony will feature a welcome address by Engr. Prof. Sadiq Z. Abubakar, President of COREN, and a keynote address by Engr. Sen. Nweze David Umahi, Honourable Minister of Works, titled in line with the assembly’s central theme.
Goodwill messages will be delivered ahead of addresses by the Host, Ezenwo Nyeson Wike, Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, and the Chief Host, Engr. Sen. Nweze David Umahi. The event will be capped by an address from the Special Guest of Honour, His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Following the opening ceremony, participants will proceed to an exhibition before the day continues with a Plenary Session in the afternoon and Syndicate Meetings of Professional Associations later in the evening.
On the final day, Wednesday 15th July, attention turns to the Engineering Family Forum, chaired by Engr. Prof. Sadiq Z. Abubakar, where presidents of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the Nigerian Association of Technologists in Engineering (NATE), the Nigerian Institution of Systems Engineers (NISET), the Nigerian Association of Engineering Craftsmen (NAEC) and other stakeholders are expected to engage on issues affecting the profession.
The assembly will formally close later that afternoon with the presentation and adoption of a communique, closing remarks from the President of COREN, and a vote of thanks from the Chairman of the Main Organising Committee, Engr. Olu Ogunduyile.
A dinner in the evening brings the three-day gathering to a close.
Organisers say the assembly reflects a renewed push by the engineering profession to strengthen regulation and enforcement standards nationwide, with the aim of improving public safety outcomes across Nigeria’s infrastructure and built environment.
