The Nigerian Institution of Space Engineers (NISEng) strives to provide its members and the space community with high-quality programs and innovations, producing world-class engineering professionals capable of addressing contemporary challenges in the space industry.

Mission Statement

NISEng’s mission is: “To provide members with the technical skills, knowledge, and expertise to meet intellectual, ethical, and career challenges, building a hopeful and prosperous future for humanity beyond the Earth’s environment.”

Objectives

NISEng’s objectives are to:

  • Develop and advance the practice of Space Engineering.
  • Develop the capacity to conduct, encourage, and promote research in Space Engineering.
  • Extend knowledge in Space Engineering and provide professional development opportunities, complementing those offered by established national and international institutions.
  • Conduct, coordinate, and support projects for the advancement of Space Engineering.
  • Exhibit social welfare and professional responsibility for the benefit of its members.

Brief History

Founded in 1958, the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) serves as the umbrella organization for the engineering profession in Nigeria. Through progressive programs, the NSE has become a key driver of professional development for its members and technological advancement for the country. The NSE Council regularly appoints expert members from various economic sectors to advise on critical matters related to the profession and provide input on government policies.

Recognizing the growing importance of space technology, the NSE Council established the Space Technology Committee in 2002. Composed of eleven engineers with expertise in space technology and research, and chaired by Engr. Prof. V. O. S. Olunloyo, FNSE, the committee’s mandate included:

  • Studying the National Space Policy (NSP).
  • Identifying the engineering aspects of the NSP, such as communications, solid minerals, water resources, environment, and agriculture.
  • Analyzing the NSP for inconsistencies with other national development policies and aspirations.
  • Recommending strategies for the successful launch of Nigeria’s first indigenous satellite.

Since its inauguration on January 22, 2002, by then-NSE President Engr. F.A. Somolu, FNSE, the committee made numerous recommendations to the Council, influencing the National Space Program. It contributed to capacity building for the utilization of NIGCOMSAT-1, university research projects on microsatellite design, and investigated the NIGCOMSAT-1 failure in 2008, submitting a report that served as the NSE’s position paper. The committee maintained professional advisory liaison with government agencies like NASRDA and NIGCOMSAT, and facilitated a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between NASRDA and NSE in 2011, focusing on space engineering cooperation.

Due to the committee’s significant contributions and the growth of space infrastructure and expertise in Nigeria, the committee requested the NSE Council to transition it into a full-fledged division. The Council approved the formation of the Space Engineering Division, the 17th division of NSE, on January 16, 2011. Its objectives included professional development in the space sector through capacity building and serving as an interface between NSE and the Federal Government on space-related matters.

On May 10, 2018, the NSE Council approved the change of name from the Space Engineering Division to the Nigerian Institution of Space Engineers (NISEng).
