Three young Indian engineers have shown that passion and purpose can outweigh money and comfort, after they turned their backs on juicy corporate jobs to build a robot that is now helping soldiers survive one of the harshest battlegrounds on earth.
Vignesh M, Vibhakar Senthil and Karthikeyan B, all graduates of Mechatronics Engineering from SRM University in Chennai, have built an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) designed to ease the suffering of Indian troops stationed at the Siachen Glacier, a place known as the world’s highest and one of its most brutal battlefields.
While their mates were busy chasing campus placements and fat salaries in multinational companies, these three young men decided to face the hard road of innovation. Their dream was simple but big, they wanted to use their engineering skills to solve a real problem troubling their country’s soldiers.
It all started in their first year at SRM University when they joined a robotics programme that pushed students to look around them, spot real life problems and design solutions that can actually work outside the classroom. That early exposure planted the seed that would later grow into something the Indian defence sector is now proud of.
Through the years, the trio did not relax. They worked on several projects including surveillance robots and a single seat solar powered vehicle, and they also took part in national innovation competitions to sharpen their skills. Their hard work eventually gave birth to Torus Robotics, the company behind the now recognised MARS UGV.
This robot, the MARS UGV, was not built for show. It was designed to carry heavy loads and reduce the physical stress soldiers go through while serving in Siachen, a place where the cold alone can break a man. By taking on some of the burden that used to fall entirely on human shoulders, the innovation is already changing how logistics work in that extreme terrain.
Today, the achievement of these three young men has caught the eyes of several government agencies and defence organisations in India, a clear sign that homegrown talent and local innovation are gaining ground in a sector long dominated by foreign technology.
Their story stands as proof that young people who dare to think differently and put purpose above paycheck can still make history, and it is fast becoming an inspiration to other engineering students who dream of building things that matter.
