The Governing Council of Greenland University, Jalingo, has approved the appointment of Professor Ojo Sunday Fayomi as the Pioneer Vice-Chancellor of the University, effective 1 August 2026.
The Council described the appointment as a strategic step in positioning the University for academic excellence, innovation, impactful research, and global competitiveness. It expressed confidence that Professor Fayomi’s wealth of academic experience, visionary leadership, and outstanding administrative record will provide the foundation for the successful establishment and sustainable growth of the University.
Professor Ojo Sunday Fayomi is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s distinguished international scholars, accomplished researchers, and astute university administrators.
His inspiring journey from humble beginnings to academic and leadership excellence exemplifies resilience, diligence, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to scholarship and nation-building.
Born on 14 March 1984 in Iyara, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, Nigeria, Professor Fayomi was raised in a humble family by parents who were a trader and a police officer. His professional journey began as a cleaner before progressing to become a laboratory technologist, lecturer, professor, and ultimately being appointed as the Pioneer Vice-Chancellor of Greenland University.
His remarkable rise reflects years of perseverance, hard work, innovation, and excellence.
An internationally recognized scholar in Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, Professor Fayomi has authored over 500 peer-reviewed publications indexed in Scopus and Web of Science, published more than 150 conference proceedings, authored six scholarly books, contributed over 30 book chapters, and holds two patents.
His research has attracted more than 9,518 citations, with an h-index of 47 and an i10-index of 237, placing him among the leading researchers in his field.
He has also successfully supervised 25 doctoral (PhD) candidates and 42 Master’s degree students to completion, while mentoring numerous early-career academics and researchers across Nigeria and beyond.
Beyond his scholarly accomplishments, Professor Fayomi is widely respected for his visionary leadership and exceptional administrative competence. He served as Dean of the College of Engineering at Bells University of Technology from 2021 to 2025, where he championed innovation, academic excellence, successful accreditation exercises, research development, and strategic institutional growth.
He currently serves as Director of Academic Planning, a position he has held since 2025, while also serving as Chairman of the Corporate Affairs Unit and Chairman of the Scopus Unit in the Office of the Vice-Chancellor.
He has been instrumental in strengthening the University’s quality assurance systems, enhancing its international research visibility, and driving initiatives that support its participation in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.
In addition, he has served on more than 40 University committees, providing strategic leadership in institutional planning, policy formulation, academic development, and governance.
Professor Fayomi is a highly sought-after international keynote speaker, mentor, and academic leader. He has received numerous prestigious awards, competitive research grants, and professional recognitions for his outstanding contributions to engineering, research, and higher education.
He is a South African National Research Foundation (NRF) C2 Rated Established Researcher, serves on the editorial boards of several reputable international journals, and continues to contribute significantly to global knowledge through research collaborations and academic partnerships across Africa and beyond.
Professor Fayomi is also an active member of several renowned professional engineering and scientific bodies. He is a registered engineer with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), a Member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), a Registered Academic Member of the Water Institute of Southern Africa (AMWISA), a Member of the Nigerian Metallurgical Society (NMS), and a Member of the Nigerian Association of Technologists in Engineering (NATE).
His active participation in these professional bodies reflects his commitment to engineering practice, research excellence, professional ethics, and the advancement of science and technology nationally and internationally.
He is happily married to Dr. Gloria Uche Fayomi, an accomplished scholar and researcher, and they are blessed with two children.
