Why Is Nigeria Downgrading It—and Why Are Mathematically Rooted Professions Silent?

Mathematics is not merely a subject taught in schools; it is the silent architecture of our world. From the intricate patterns of nature to the algorithms behind social media, from religious symbolism to economic planning, mathematics permeates every facet of human experience.

Yet in Nigeria—a country grappling with technological underdevelopment, economic instability, and educational challenges—mathematics appears to be under siege. Recent government policies and the educational climate suggest a disturbing trend: the devaluation of mathematics and its foundational importance. Even more concerning is the silence from professional bodies and individuals whose fields depend entirely on mathematical principles.

What does this say about our national priorities?

To understand the essence of mathematics, we must begin at the roots—including religion, which, ironically, plays a dominant role in Nigerian society.

*The Scientific and Technological Core*

* The relationship between mathematics and science or technology is direct and irrefutable.

* Physics uses mathematical models to explain the universe.

* Engineering is built on algebra, calculus, andb geometry.

* Computer science, the heart of modern innovation, is founded entirely on mathematical logic and binary systems.

* Economics, statistics, medicine, artificial intelligence—all require deep mathematical understanding.

*So why is Nigeria falling behind?*

In a world driven by data, where mathematics is the currency of innovation, Nigeria’s curriculum and public discourse often relegate mathematics to a ‘difficult subject’ or a hurdle to be passed in WAEC or JAMB—not a skill to be mastered or celebrated. Some universities are reportedly diluting or removing core mathematics from the general education requirements, citing student failure rates or curriculum overload.

This is not just educational neglect. It is national self-sabotage.

*Mathematics in Everyday Living*

Mathematics is not just for scientists. It is part of daily life:

* Budgeting and saving

* Calculating distances and time

* Making informed business decisions

* Understanding loans, interest rates, and investment returns

In short, mathematics is the language of rational living. A society that downgrades it risks raising citizens who are financially illiterate, scientifically blind, and technologically dependent on others.

*Why the Silence from Mathematically Rooted Professions?*

Perhaps the most disheartening aspect of this issue is that those who depend on mathematics for their careers are not speaking out.

Where are the voices of:

* Engineers?

* Data scientists?

* Economists?

* Architects?

* Statisticians?

* Medical researchers?

* University lecturers?

Why is there no national protest, petition, or campaign from these professions as mathematics is downplayed in our institutions?

*Possible reasons:*

* Professional apathy: Many professionals focus on survival or career advancement rather than advocacy.

* Fear of backlash: Speaking against government policies may be seen as political dissent.

* Lack of unity: Fragmentation among professional bodies dilutes collective action.

* Over-reliance on religion: In a society where miracles are expected to solve practical problems, rational discourse often takes a backseat.

But silence is complicity. If professionals whose careers are rooted in mathematical logic do not defend its value, who will?

*The Way Forward:* Reclaiming the Essence of Mathematics

If Nigeria is to thrive in the modern world, mathematics must be defended, valued, and taught not just as a subject but as a life skill and a national asset.

1. Reform curricula to emphasize applied mathematics and real-world relevance.

2. National campaigns to change public perception about mathematics—make it engaging, not terrifying.

3. Professional bodies must speak up—through media, policy briefings, and public lectures.

4. Government policies should prioritize STEM education as a pillar of development.

5. Link mathematics with religion and culture, showing its relevance to all aspects of Nigerian life.
