The Nigerian Chemical Engineers have expressed readiness to embrace Artificial Intelligence Era while taking full advantage of the benefits. The Society also honoured some distinguished members at a luncheon in Lagos, writes, Isqil Najim
The Annual luncheon, Induction and Public lecture of the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers Society, NSChE Lagos/Ogun Chapter held on Saturday 19th 2024 brought together industry professionals, academicians, and students to explore the latest advancements in chemical engineering and honor outstanding contributions to the field.
Leading the conversation as the Guest Speaker, the Managing Director, Chief Engr. Augustine Ukpong, while delivering lecture titled, “AI and Chemical Engineering: A 4th Industrial Revolution Perspective,” averred that the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) will usher in a new era of innovation, transforming industries and reshaping the way we live and work.
He urged Chemical engineers to brace up for the challenges and opportunities ahead.
Speaking on the evolution of computers and Automation in the industry, he said that the AI is getting more sophisticated at doing what human can do efficiently. He however noted that Chemical engineering is not new to innovation.
Ukpong pointed out that the AI touches on everything in the world in terms of knowledge and understanding. It also has significant impacts on education, healthcare among others. he added that Chemical engineering, a field that has long relied on complex calculations and empirical knowledge, is no exception.
With the advent of automation technologies, ANN, machine learning algorithms, and other technological applications, the execution of chemical engineering processes has undergone a transformative shift. These technologies, according to him have become integral in streamlining and enhancing various facets of chemical engineering.
According to him. The synergy between AI and chemical engineering is profound. AI algorithms, with their ability to analyze vast datasets, identify patterns, and make predictions, can enhance the capabilities of chemical engineers. This collaboration will empowers us to tackle complex challenges and unlock new opportunities.
He explained various fields of Chemical engineering where AI can find application and aid the works of engineers. From process Optimization to product development. He identified other benefits to engineering to include the ability to effect real-time quality monitoring of product quality, identifying deviations and taking corrective actions thereby reducing the need for extensive quality control measures.
Ukpong pointed out that with Artificial intelligence and Robotics system, some hitherto dangerous experiments can now be executed through an automated robot. He said this will lead to engineers’ ability to test their products and calculate safety factor before getting in contact with human. He also pointed out that the AI can be deployed to automate the design of complex chemical processes, predict materials behaviours, while also considering factors such as cost, safety, and environmental impact.
He predicted that by 2030s, “we expect something that is made with AI to surpass twice more than we anticipated in our design.”
Despite all these benefits, Ukpong warned out there are challenges and implications toward deployment of the AI into the industry.
He discussed the ethical concern regarding AI adoption. According to him, a lot of people are concerned that AI can be used for negative applications such as fight war or terrorism. He acknowledged this to be genuine concern and pointed out it is already happening. However, he stressed that the positive outweighs the negatives and that the world is fast moving toward deployment of AI and we cannot afford to be left behind in the next industrial revolution. “The time to embrace it, therefore is now.” he said.
On possible job losses, he admitted that AI will also replace some jobs done by human beings but not totally as far as engineering is concerned. He urged engineers to upgrade themselves to stay competitive in the emerging world of technologies. He, however, warned that it is crucial to approach AI with a balanced perspective, recognizing both its benefits and limitations. He suggested needs to develop ethical guidelines and regulations to ensure responsible AI development and deployment.
As AI continues to evolve, its impact on chemical engineering will only grow. By embracing AI and leveraging its power, chemical engineers can drive innovation, improve efficiency, and development of new products, processes, and materials that will benefit society as a whole. He concluded.
Earlier in his address, the Chairman Lagos Ogun Chapter, Engr. Olusegun Abayomi Sodeinde while welcoming members said the annual luncheon of the Chemical Engineering Society was intended to bring together members to interact and network.
“AI is no longer a futuristic concept but a practical tool that can revolutionize the way we approach chemical engineering challenges. By harnessing the power of AI, we can unlock new opportunities and drive innovation in the industry.” He said.
Also speaking at the event, the Deputy National President Engr. Bayo Olarewaju-Alo agreed with earlier submissions while shedding more light the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in the chemical engineering industry.

The highlight of the event featured the induction of new members into the Society, a testament to the growing interest in chemical engineering.

The Society recognized and honored outstanding members with merit awards, celebrating their significant contributions to the field. Some of those honoured are, Engr Yashim Zamani Kekwot, Deputy Manager, transportation and Measurement, Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, NUPRC, Engr Olaide Shaw, Director Acreage Management Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, NUPRC; Engr. Prof. Faith Uchenna Babalola, a professor at the Department Chemical Engineering, University of Lagos; Engr Akinpelu Babatunde Alfred, Managing Director Nember Creek Trunk Line (NCTL), a subsidiary of Aiteo eastern Exploration and production Ltd.(OML 29); Engr Ijadunola Olushina Hamod, Managing partner, HVR Engineering Limited; Engr Clement Madu, a Senior Lecturer at Department of Chemical Engineering, at University of Lagos, and Engr Abdulkareem Yusuf Temitope, of Lagos State University, Epe Campus.
A special Gold Award was presented to a member who spearheaded a community development project, demonstrating the Society’s commitment to responsibility. A Platinum Award was also bestowed upon a long-time supporter of the Society, acknowledging their unwavering dedication to the organization’s mission.
