The Chairman Nigerian Society of Engineers, Ota Branch, Engr Adewale George Adeyemi has called on the Covenant University management to support the Branch towards registration of engineering students and also more participation in NSE activities.
This was made during the courtesy visit to the The Vice Chancellor of Covenant University, Prof Abiodun Adebayo at the University recently.
The visit had in attendance, Dean College of Engineering represented by the HOD Civil Engineering department and other principal officers and the delegation of NSE Ota Branch.
Appreciating the university’s management for their support to the Branch, Adewale recalled the ideals and history of Nigerian Society of Engineers. He said the NSE, founded on February 6, 1958 with the objective to promote the advancement of engineering education, research and practice has come a long way in discharge of its core missions towards enhancing the professional capabilities of its members so as to better equip them to fulfil the needs of the profession for the good of the public and the nation.
He explained the different membership categories within the Society and said that membership is open to all who possess qualifications that are accredited by the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).
Speaking on Young engineers development, Adeyemi, who is third Chairman of the Branch, identified young engineers as critical part of NSE development plan. He noted that youths are the future of any society and explained that the Branch is extending its young engineers development programme to the University with view to engage in cross-fertilization of ideas process through a town and gown initiative that would see professionals across various fields of engineering coming to participate in workshops, seminars, symposia, and roundtable discourse.
He explained that this will help students understand what is expected of them in the industry upon graduation.
Towards this light, the Nigerian University Engineering Student Association which will be under the control of the college of engineering in collaboration with the NSE Ota branch will organize programmes tailored to bridge the gap between the classroom and industry which will be facilitated by experienced engineers.
On membership registration, he said the registration is online and urged the university to grant a day for induction of graduate members as part of their graduation.
On behalf of the Branch leadership, Adeyemi congratulated the University for the Giant Strides in all areas of endeavours, in particular is the great feat achieved by the students of Covenant University at the 29th COREN Assembly where they were crowned champion in the Committee of Dean of Engineering and Technology in Nigerian Universities competition. In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abiodun H. Adebayo, appreciated the leadership of the NSE, Ota Chapter, for the visit, while noting the premium Covenant University places on her engineering programmes, thus the active involvement of her faculty and staff in NSE activities in the local, state and national levels.
Professor Adebayo highlighed the huge investment and support the Board of Regents of the University has invested in her engineering programmes. “The support will continue as the University commits herself towards expanding the frontiers of engineering practices in the country,” he added.
Professor Adebayo said the engineering programmes of Covenant University have gone beyond the realm of publication and research to students’ engagement with the intent of inculcating in them best practices expected in engineering practices.
He assured the Branch that the University Management would readily work with them to ensure that engineering students of the University become active participants of activities of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Ota Chapter.
