Engineers Mourn the passing of A trailblazer and inspiration, Former Federal Commissioner, Olufemi Olumide

The Nigerian engineering community has lost another illustrious member in person of Engr. Rear Admiral Olufemi Olumide (rtd), OFR, mni, an ex Navy officer, a close ally of President Muhammadu Buhari and a Former Federal Commissioner of Transport who died on August 6 in Ilishan Remo, Ogun state. He was said to be 82.

Engr. Rear Admiral Femi Olumide was born on the 6th of April 1938 in Kemta Okejigbo, Abeokuta to the famous Olumide family. He started his education at the C.M.S. School, Lagos from 1944 to 1948. He then went on to the Lagos Baptist Academy, Lagos between 1949 and 1952. From there, he proceeded to Igbobi College, Yaba, for his A-Level from 1953 to 1957.

He was admitted subsequently in the Nigerian College of Arts, Science, and Technology, Ibadan Branch from 1958 to 1960. From there, he moved to the Zaria Branch of the same Institution from 1960 to 1963. He qualified B.Sc. Mechanical Engineering in 1963. He was commissioned into the Nigerian Navy as a Direct Entry Engineering Officer in July 1963 with the rank of Probationary Sub-Lieutenant in the Department of Marine Engineering. He subsequently rose to the peak of his Military career.

During his highly successful career, he attended several specialist Engineering courses including Direct Entry Sub-Lieutenants Course at H.M.S. Victory, Portsmouth, U.K from 1963 to 1964, Marine Engineering Specialist Course H.M.S Sultan, Gosport, U.K., with Sea-Time service on H.M.S. Monkton (a Royal Navy Mine-Sweeper) from 1964 to 1965, Gunnery School, H.M.S. Excellent, Portsmouth, U.K. in 1965.

He also attended a Post-graduate Naval Architecture Engineering/Constructors Course at Royal Naval Engineering College, Manadon, Plymouth U.K., Royal Naval College, Greenwich, London, U.K., and University College, London 1966 to 1969. Rear Admiral Olumide also attended Senior Staff courses Senior Dockyard Management Courses, Philadelphia, Naval Dockyard, Philadelphia, U.S. 1977, Senior Executive Officers’ Course No 1, National Institute for Policy and Slvategic Studies, Kuru, Plateau State from 1979 to 1980.

During the course of his Military services, Rear Admiral Olumide was given the following significant services appointments: As Base Engineering Officer (B.E.O) Naval Base, N.N.S. Beecroft, Apapa 1963 – 1965 and Marine Engineering Officer (M.E.O) afloat, N.N.S ‘Nigeria’ (Frigate Flagship) last year of Civil War. 1969 to 1970.

Rear Admiral Olumide retired from Active Service in December 1983 with rank of Rear Admiral as Chief of Material in Naval Headquarters, Ministry of Defence, Lagos
He was a fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, member of the Board of Trustees of the Igbobi College Old Boys Association distinguished Old Boys and guests, a Seadog. an Engineer and Military Administrator, he is survived by children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

…NSE Abeokuta commiserates with family and engineering community

Meanwhile the Abeokuta Branch of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has commiserated with the family and engineering family on the passage of the highly revered Engr. Real Admiral Olufemi Olumide (Rtd), OFR, mni, FNSE.

In a Statement signed by the Branch Chairman, Engr. Dr. Olanrewaju Ahmed Apampa, the late Pa Olumide was described as a trailblazer, an inspiration and a mentor par excellence.

“Pa Olumide paid a significant role in the growth and development of the Nigerian Society of Engineers and the Engineering Profession, particularly during his time as Federal Commissioner of Transport, at a time COREN (then Council of Registered Engineers) was established and being nurtured”, Apampa said.

Apampa further said that Late Olumide was a pillar of moral and financial support for Abeokuta Branch and always honoured the branch with his presence at major occasions of the branch.

He implored his immediate and the entire engineering family to find solace in his good works and ensure that his legacies are carried on.

May the soul of Engr. Rear Admiral (rtd) Olufemi Olumide rest in perfect peace.
