In a move that has sent ripples through the global tech community, Dr. Song-Chun Zhu, a leading authority in artificial intelligence, has returned to China after nearly three decades in the United States.
His journey, from a small Chinese village to the helm of a prestigious American AI lab and now to a key role in China’s national AI strategy, offers a profound look at the shifting landscape of scientific power and the growing tensions between two technological superpowers.
Born in 1969 near Ezhou, China, Zhu grew up during the Cultural Revolution, an era marked by poverty and political turmoil. He was exposed to intellectual debates through visiting “reeducated” scholars, where he developed a thirst for knowledge that propelled him to one of China’s top universities, the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC).
At a time when US-China relations were normalizing, he viewed America as a “beacon, a cathedral of science.”
In 1992, with the help of a full fellowship from Harvard, Zhu embarked on his American journey. His talent was quickly recognized by his advisor, renowned mathematician David Mumford, who was “flabbergasted at his vision.”
Zhu’s academic career flourished. He went on to hold positions at Brown and Stanford before landing at UCLA in 2002, where he obtained tenure at the age of 33. His research into how machines recognize patterns in data laid the groundwork for modern AI systems.
During his 18-year tenure at UCLA, he was celebrated for his pioneering work, attracting prestigious grants from the Pentagon and the National Science Foundation.
Despite his success, Zhu became increasingly disillusioned with the direction of the American AI community. He became intellectually estranged from the dominant “big data” approach championed by neural network pioneers like Geoffrey Hinton and Yann LeCun. While these researchers were celebrated for their breakthroughs with large datasets, Zhu believed that true intelligence required a “small data, big task” approach—the ability to reason with minimal inputs.
He grew frustrated that the field had become focused on incremental gains and a “performance-at-all-cost mentality,” leading him to read philosophy and pursue a lonely path of research. His opposition to deep learning became so strong that he reportedly “blasted” a new recruit at his startup for including a slide on the topic in a presentation.
Beyond his intellectual disagreements, the political climate for Chinese scientists in the US also soured. . The Trump administration’s “China Initiative” and rising geopolitical tensions led to a climate of suspicion and scrutiny. While Zhu maintains he was never investigated by federal agents, he says he found it increasingly difficult to secure funding for his research, and some of his students were held up at immigration, accustomed to budgeting “extra hours at the airport.”
In August 2020, Zhu made the decision to return to China on a one-way ticket. He kept the move secret from many of his colleagues and even his older daughter, citing the politically volatile climate and a desire to avoid being a “public scapegoat.” While Zhu stated that he had no job offers at the time, two sources familiar with the matter claim that conversations with the Beijing municipal government began as early as 2018. They also claim that these discussions coincided with the recruitment of his younger daughter, figure skater Zhu Yi, to compete for China in the 2022 Winter Olympics. Zhu has denied that his daughter’s recruitment was a “bargaining chip” for his return.
Upon his return, Zhu was feted as a patriot and was offered full professorships at two top Beijing universities—Peking University and Tsinghua University. He also became the director of the lavishly funded Beijing Institute for General Artificial Intelligence (BigAI), where he now has the resources to pursue his vision.
He has since become a member of China’s top political advisory body and proposed that the nation should treat AI with the same strategic urgency as a nuclear weapons program.
His story is reminiscent of Qian Xuesen, the Chinese-born rocket scientist who was forced to return to China during the McCarthy era and went on to lead China’s military and technological breakthroughs.
For Song-Chun Zhu, his return was a “once in a lifetime opportunity.” As his friend Mark Nitzberg recalls, when asked if he was sure he wanted to become a “vector” for China to dominate AI, Zhu responded, “They are giving me resources that I could never get in the United States… I have to do it.”
