Nigerian engineers today stand at a crossroads of conservative that shies away from the rough-and-tumble of political and social activism. Yet, the history of the profession in Nigeria revealed that engineering professionals were at the vanguard of activism and struggles in Nigeria at some points.
It must be noted that, while modern engineering was formally introduced in Nigeria through the British, the liberal professions arrived earlier. The first indigenous lawyer, Christopher Sapara Williams, was called to the English Bar in 1879, and began practice in 1888. Early indigenous doctors, like his brother, Dr. Oguntola Sapara, were already active in the 1880s and 1890s. This show that the technical fields lagged slightly in indigenous professionalization, but once arrived, the engineers became the most radical, at least for some times. Their impacts on national development were most profound.
Herbert Macaulay: Engineering the Idea of a Nation
Herbert Macaulay was recorded as the father of Nigerian nationalism. Trained as a Civil Engineer and Architect in England. His life was a practical life of engineer who applied his engineering skills beyond technical application. Macaulay’s career set a precedent for the next generation of engineers who followed him.
Engineering education instills a sense of precision, critical analysis, and systemic problem-solving. Engineers are typically unemotional when dealing with facts and figures. They are trained to precise, not just to criticise but to also dissect the problems and provide solutions. Macaulay approached colonial administration not as an emotional issue (as most activists do today), but as an objective, calculated logic intended to have oppressive system dismantled. His use of facts, figures, and legal arguments in the Water Rate Protest and the Eleko Affair was a direct application of this engineering logic.
As Surveyor of Crown Lands, he possessed intimate, detailed knowledge of colonial infrastructure, land tenure, and public finance—the nuts and bolts of the colonial state. This mastery allowed him to expose corruption and unfair policies with unassailable technical accuracy. He didn’t just feel the injustice; he could quantify it.
When Macaulay resigned from Public services in 1898 to establish his private practice (as Nigeria’s first registered indigenous engineer to do so); it was a direct protest against racial discrimination in the colonial service. This act also highlight the entrepreneurial spirit of engineers. This path was later followed by other pioneering Nigerian engineers who understood that engineers do not necessarily need to wait for government to create jobs on their own.
Another of the names of early engineers who deployed their Engineering skills toward championing social cause was late Engr Chief S. O. Fadahunsi: A former President of Nigerian Society of Engineers. Chief Fadahunsi was on record to have confronted the military Government with facts. Like Herbert Macaulay, his name was tested by the system , but unlike Macualay, he found justice and cleared his name in court of law against unfair allegations by the governments. In 1976, while working for a private engineering company on a water project in Abeokuta, Lt.-Colonel Oladipo Diya, the then military governor of Ogun State, had him arrested and detained for a week on trumped up charges. Fadahunsi fought him to a stand still and had to be released as he was innocent of all the charges leveled against him by the military governor.

The Iva Valley Massacre: The Blood that Watered the Seed of Nationalism
The activism of the technical class in Mining sub-sector culminated in a tragic but decisive event that became a defining moment of the nationalist struggle. They were the coal miners of the British-administered Iva Valley Coal Mine in Enugu, who were essential to powering the colonial economy. Their protest centered on demands for back-pay/arrears and an end to brutal, racially discriminatory working conditions. These miners included skilled labourers such as hewers and tubmen.
On November 18, 1949, British colonial police, under the command of Superintendent Captain F.S. Philip, opened fire on the unarmed, striking miners, who were simply occupying the mine to prevent a lock-out. The shooting of these brave men, resulted in the death of 21 miners and a bystander, with 51 others injured. The names of a few documented victims include Sunday Anyasado (hewer) and Livinus Okechukwuma (machine man). The incident shattered the legitimacy of colonial rule in the eyes of the Nigerian people and galvanized a united front among disparate nationalist groups like the National Emergency Committee (NEC) and the Zikist Movement. This accelerated the demand for self-rule.

Technical Workers, Labour Union and the General Strike
The technical staff were not just engineers at the top; the skilled workers who ran the colonial engine were also instrumental in the rise of organized labor and anti-colonial agitation. Pa Michael Imoudu (1902-2005): Though a labour leader, Imoudu’s career began as a linesman in the Posts and Telegraphs Department before moving to the Nigeria Railways as an apprentice turner. His intimate knowledge of the railway system and the plight of the technical workers made him the perfect leader for industrial action.
The 1945 General Strike was largely spearheaded by Railway and Electricity technical staff. It introduced modern trade unionism to Nigeria and opened the door for political independence. The African Civil Servants Technical Workers Union (formed in 1941, with Imoudu as Vice-President) demanded the Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) to cushion the effects of World War II inflation. Also documented name in the struggle was T. O. Okpareke in Eastern Nigeria, an many others.
Nigerian Engineers also played huge roles during the Civil wars.
On the Biafran side, the engineers and scientists of the Research and Production (RAP) Agency undertook a radical social responsibility dictated by existential necessity. Blockaded from the outside world, their professional duty transcended standard ethics to become a direct commitment to societal survival. This was demonstrated not just in military technology (like the Ogbunigwe local explosives), but in their pragmatic advocacy for self-reliance. By creating improvised oil refineries, local salt factories, and adapting machinery for war-time production, they effectively advocated for the viability of the fledgling state. Their engineering output was a material political statement—a non-verbal, technical argument that Biafra possessed the ingenuity and human resources to endure the blockade and sustain its population, using indigenous technology as a symbol of sovereignty.
For the Federal side (Nigerian Army Engineers/Sappers), their role was rooted in a more conventional social responsibility—maintaining the integrity and function of the established state. Their core work involved the rapid repair and construction of crucial infrastructure, This was an act of professional fidelity to the Federal government’s mission of national unity and re-establishing order. Their form of advocacy was primarily directed towards national cohesion and future development. Their efforts laid the technical foundation for the eventual post-war policies of Reconstruction, Rehabilitation, and Reconciliation, thus driving engineering as an essential tool for re-integrating the divided nation.
The Quest for University Education
Engineering students were also part of the drive for higher education to break the colonial ceiling. The first high education institution in Nigeria was Yaba Higher College (established 1930). Its initial focus was predominantly on technical and vocational training to produce staff for the colonial service. It provided vocational training in subjects that included agriculture, forestry, medicine, veterinary science, surveying and civil and mechanical engineering. It also provided training for secondary school teachers, mainly science teachers. The college offered limited diplomas, so Nigerians who wanted higher education either had to go abroad or earn external degrees from the University of London through correspondence courses.
As narrated by late Engr Chief S. O fadahun, between January 1943 and January 1945, Yaba Higher College students in Achimota (Ghana) strongly protested their “exile” and demanded the relocation of their science facilities ahead of the British Elliot Commission visit to assess higher education in West Africa. Fearing the Commission would be misled by Achimota’s temporarily superior resources, the students successfully demanded the return of all science equipment and their classes to Yaba in 1945 so that the Commission would evaluate the college in its normal operational setting.
The pressures from students and nationalists, and Nigerians studying abroad, combined, eventually led to the establishment of the University College, Ibadan in 1948, which was initially in a special relationship with the University of London to award its degrees.
The Radical Engineering Academics
Here we will take a look at Professor Ayodele Awojobi(1937–1984) as an example to represent his contemporaries in this categories.. He was a Mechanical Engineer and academic at the University of Lagos, Prof. Awojobi became the first African to be awarded a Doctor of Science (DSc) in Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College, London. He became a relentless social crusader and activist in the Second Republic, where he famously challenged the 1979 presidential election results in court. Despite losing the case, his radical public lectures and books, such as Nigeria in Search of a Social Order, defined the role of the committed intellectual in holding power to account.
Other radical academics and professionals of that era include the first and second generation of Nigerian engineers who were often at the forefront of social agitation.
