Engineers Urged to Lead Sustainable Future Through Innovation

A professor of Mechanical Engineering, Engr Prof. Umma Abdullahi, sent a clarion calls to engineers to lead in the making of sustainable future through innovation, Isqil Najim reports

Abdullahi who is the first female professor of mechanical engineering from Northern Nigeria, was speaking on topic, “Shaping a Sustainable Future Through Engineering: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure for Sustainable developmentduring the World Engineering Day event organised by the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers, NIMechE.

“The world is at a pivotal moment in history. We are faced with complex challenges, from climate changes, economic system and resource depletion to rapid urbanization and inequality.” Prof. Abdullahi said, acknowledging the complex challenges facing humanity, from climate change to resource depletion.

“As the global population continues to grow, our industries and cities are evolving at an unprecedented pace. But with this growth comes a pressing need for sustainability — not just in terms of environmental preservation, but in the way we design, build, and innovate to ensure a better future for all.: she said.

“Engineering is a force that has shaped our world throughout history, enabling mankind to overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges.” She added.

She said that the power of engineering extends beyond building structures and machines. “It empowers societies to adapt, innovate, and thrive in an ever-changing world. From improving healthcare to combatting climate change, engineering plays a pivotal role in shaping a sustainable and prosperous future for all of humanity.”

“As we continue to harness the power of engineering, it is essential to prioritize ethical and sustainable practices to ensure a better world for generations to come”. She said.

“Industry plays a central role in the sustainability agenda and has the potential to lead the way toward a sustainable future,” she asserted, citing examples of industries adopting green technologies and circular economy principles.

“However, the real challenge lies in scaling these solutions. As engineers, we must continue to push boundaries, creating new, scalable innovations that can be adopted across industries and reach all corners of the globe.” She said.

Innovation, she said, is the catalyst for transformation. “Innovation is the key to unlocking sustainable solutions. It’s this spirit of creativity that enables us to solve the most pressing issues facing society today.” she explained

She pointed to renewable energy technologies and the fusion of digital technologies with engineering as prime examples. “Sustainability requires a radical shift in how we think. Traditional solutions won’t cut it. The challenges ahead demand bold, innovative thinking.”

On infrastructure, Prof. Abdullahi stressed the need for resilience, adaptability, and alignment with sustainable practices. “Infrastructure forms the backbone of any society. But to be truly sustainable, our infrastructure needs to be resilient, adaptable, and aligned with sustainable practices,” she stated.

“Engineers are the architects of our future. They are the ones who design, build, and refine the systems and structures that will drive sustainability forward.” she declared.

She called for the embrace of new technologies, investment in research and development, and the integration of sustainability into engineering education.

To achieve this, she pointed out the importance of collaboration which she said is crucial for addressing the scale of sustainability challenges. “Engineering doesn’t operate in a vacuum. It interacts with economics, social sciences, policy, and human behaviour.” she said it will take collaboration across industries, borders, and disciplines to drive the transformative changes we need.

She told engineers to work alongside professionals from other fields, ensuring that solutions are not only technically sound but also socially responsible and economically viable.

“The future is not something we wait for—it is something we create. As engineers, we have the unique privilege and responsibility to lead the charge.” She urged engineers to use their skills and influence to drive meaningful change within their organization and community. saying “Engineering is a tool for empowerment, and it is our duty to use it responsibly.”

“We are the stewards of the future, and with the right industry practices, innovative solutions, and resilient infrastructure, we can build a world that is sustainable, equitable, and prosperous for generations to come.”

“Let us, as engineers, commit ourselves to this challenge. Let us innovate boldly, work collaboratively, and build sustainably. Together, we can shape a future that works for all.” She concluded.
