HRH, OBA ENGR. ABDULWAHAB OGUNBIYI, FNSE, THE ELEKU OF ODO-EKU

Engr. AbdulWahab Ogunbiyi joined the Lagos State Civil Service through an automatic appointment offered him by the State Government at the completion of his NYSC service year in the State in 1987 with a merit award.

He won the award for carrying out a machine design project, “farm weeding implement” for NYSC in the then Lagos State Ministry of Works and Transport.

LAWMA: Consequently, he was deployed to the then Lagos State Waste Disposal Board (LSWDB) now known as Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) in 1987 as a Maintenance Engineer and rose from Mech. Engr. II to Chief Mech. Engr, occupying various positions up to the Controller of Works and Head of Engineering Department before he was transferred.

At LAWMA workshop, Engr Ogunbiyi designed and fabricated a number of machine parts
and components to aid his maintenance works. These include FR10B brake pad and disc; covered dino bins; CAT 950F turbo charger base spacer; etc.

In 1998, he designed a “Rotary Waste Incinerating Kiln” for the Lagos State Ministry of
Environment and constructed two Staff Buses in 2003 from scraped waste trucks for LAWMA.

LAWMA to Ministry of Works: Engr. Ogunbiyi was transferred from LAWMA in 2005 and posted to the Research Unit of the Mechanical Services Department of Ministry of Works in April 2006 as a Research Engineer. He designed and developed the following machines and plants:

(i) Farm Weeding Machine (Tractor-Pulled Implement 1986/87)
(ii)Small Scale Waste Incinerator (1998)
(iii) Pulverizing Machine for solid waste management (1998/2006);
(iv) Shredding Machine for solid waste management (2008/2010);
(v) Road Sweeping Machine for road sweeping and maintenance (2010/2012);
(vi) Interlocking Brick Making Machine for road construction (2013/2014);
(vii) Hand Operated Fruits Juice Extractor for family and office use (2014);
(viii) Mechanized Abattior (2013/2014) – yet to build
(ix) Lagoon Weeds and Wastes Harvesting Boat (2014/2015) at design level;
(x) Hot Air Rotary Fish Drying Plant for drying of fish, meat and vegetables;
(xi) New road sweeping machine, (2015/2017);
(xii) E- Waste treatment machines and equipment (2015) – yet to build;
(xiii) Cassava Chips Rotary Drum Drying Plant (design work in progress);
(xiv) Hydraulic operated Canopy (design work in progress);
(xv) Interlock Bricks Laying Machine (design work in progress)

Two of his machines have been granted patent approval by the Federal Republic of Nigeria while process is in progress for another two. By this, Engr AbdulWahab Ogunbiyi, FNSE, is one of the flag bearers of ENGINEERING profession in Nigeria, and outside the country.

GM LAWMA: Engr Ogunbiyi was appointed as General Manager LAWMA between July 2015 – June 2016. As GM (LAWMA), he carried out: (i) Studies on waste characterization and waste generation per capital, which are key data for effective and economic waste management in Lagos; (ii) Design and development of machines and equipment for
treatment of E-Waste materials in Lagos. This research work was planned by UNEP for support to the State for production in order to be adopted for use as a model to other African countries for E-Waste treatment.

His Technical Papers: In the course of his Engineering Career in Lagos State, Engr Ogunbiyi has written twenty-three(23) technical papers, delivered at different fora both in Nigeria and abroad. One of his papers titled “Solid Waste Technology Research Works in Lagos State Nigeria: Smelting of Waste Nylon and Low-Density Plastics (LDPs) In A Fluidized Bed System”, which was presented at the 25th Conference on Solid Waste Technology and Management, 14th to 17th March 2010, Widener University, Philadelphia, PA, US attracted a research collaboration between Engr Ogunbiyi group and a company, Inter-Engineering Ltd, in Germany working on waste conversion.

His Professional Status and Honour: Engr A Ogunbiyi, is a COREN registered Engineer, a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE), a Fellow and Past National Chairman of Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers (NIEE) and a Fellow of Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers (NiMechE).

He holds B. Eng. (Mech.) from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (1986); M.Sc. (Met. & Mat.) from University of Lagos (2003); and currently, he is a PhD student and a Researcher in the University of Lagos. He also holds certificates in (i) AutoCAD 2006 Essential (ii) AutoCAD 3D and (iii) Autodesk Inventor Professional (Mechanical) from Autodesk Inc.

He received a number of merit awards, commendations and awards of excellence in the course of his services in the State. Few of these include: (i) Lagos State Productivity Award 2010; (ii) Lagos State Government Officer of the Year Award 2009; (iii) LAWMA
commendation letter dated 6/11/02; (iv) LAWMA commendation letter dated 24/4/99; (v) LAWMA commendation letter dated 4/9/92; (vi) 1986/1987 Service year Lagos State NYSC Merit award. Engr. Ogunbiyi retired statutorily from Lagos Civil Service on October 10, 20218 at age of 60 years.

His Present Career Status: Engr. A. Ogunbiyi retired statutorily from the service of Lagos State Government on the 10th October, 2018 as Director of Research and Development, Mechanical and Electrical Services, Ministry of Works and Infrastructure. And today, He is:

(i) the MD/CEO of De Preferredtech Nig Ltd;
(ii) a Board Member of WAHAN Foods Nig Ltd;
(iii) an Associate Member of BOLCON ASSOCIATES LTD;
(iv) an Associate Member, LAWMA Engineering Consulting Group;
(v) a member of 3MPa Research Group UniLag;
(vi) a member, Environment Management Group, UNEP;
(vii) a member of Energy and Environment Group, University of Ibadan.
(viii) a member M&E Research Engineers, Lagos;
(ix) a member, Lagos Waste Plastics Treatment Initiative Group.

MD/CEO De Preferredtech Nig Ltd, he designed the following machines and plnts:

(i) Commercial Size of Hot Air Rotary Fish Drying Plant, 2019/2020 install in Epe;
(ii) Small Scale, Hot Air Rotary Fish Drying Plant, under test running at PWD, Ikeja;
(iii) Mechanized Garri Processing Plant (April 2020)
(iv) LAWMA Public Waste Plastic Bottle Collection Slip Bin (September 2020)
(v) Waste Plastics Processing For Production Of Plastic Bricks(April 2021)
(vi) Isin Farm Cultivator_ IFC (June 2021)

Royalty: Engr AbdulWahab Aboyeji Ayanda Ogunbiyi, FNSE, was, crowned on the 12th August, 2019 as the Eleku of Odo-Eku, his home town, in Isin LGA, Kwara State after the Late Kabiyesi passed on, on the 1st July 2019.
