Founded originally as a Department within the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers, NIMechE became a full Institution in December 2002 under the leadership of Engr. Chief Akintunde Zedomi, a fellow of NSE when in December 2002 at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Mechanical division of the Nigerian Society of Engineers in Port Harcourt it was unanimously resolved that the division be transformed into the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers (NIMechE). The institution which has a full standing authority as derived from the articles of Association of the Nigerian Society of Engineers and is not a parallel body to the society. NIMechE mission in the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers is to propagate the effective practice of mechanical engineering within Nigeria and ensure its entrenchment in the body politic.
