Head of the Nigerian Satellite Augmentation System (NSAS) at NIGCOMSAT, Engr. Dr. Lasisi Salami Lawal, has made a strong case for the integration of space technology into national security strategies.
He said this while appearing as the Guest Speaker at a distinguished lecture organised by NSE Giri Branch in honour its first Chairman, Engr Aishatu Umar.
Lasisi, presenting paper on “Application of Space Technology: A Tool for Enhancing National Security,” stated that modern national security demands a comprehensive approach, transcending traditional military concerns.
He stressed that space-based capabilities are indispensable for addressing environmental, economic, and social vulnerabilities.
Dr. Lawal detailed the multifaceted applications of space technology, highlighting its critical role in defense, communications, disaster management, transportation, agriculture, and broadcasting.
He warned that neglecting space technology development could leave Nigeria vulnerable to emerging threats, particularly in the realm of counterspace capabilities.
He urged the nation to accelerate its space program, emphasizing the urgent need for an Assembly, Integration, Test, and Design Center to foster indigenous technological development.
He stated that Nigeria must move from consumers of space tech, to producers of space tech.
Engr. Mrs. Aishatu Aliyu Umar, a Civil Engineer, served as the first Chairman of the Nigerian Society of Engineers Giri Branch. She is also the first female National Chairman of Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers, NICE.
The event drew a distinguished audience of engineering professionals, including immediate Past President of NSE Engr. Chief Otis Anyaeji FNSE, Engr. Babagana Mohammed FNSE Deputy President NSE, Engr. Alex Okopi Momoh NSE Executive Secretary and NICE Ag. Executive Secretary Engr. Okey Ezema FNSE.
Speaking at the event, the Deputy National Chairman NICE, Engr. Jang Tanko, praised Giri Branch for honoring Engr. Mrs. Umar, while Engr. Dr. Tunde Olatunji FNSE praised her sterling leadership qualities.
Other dignitaries included Engr. Joseph Akinteye FNSE NSE Vice President, Engr. Tasiu Wudil NSE Vice President, and former NSE Vice President Engr. Mrs. Magret Oguntala. Many NICE Council members were also present.
The occasion concluded with dance and awards of excellence presented to Engr. Mrs. Umar and Engr. Chief Otis Anyaeji FNSE
