I welcome you all to this edition of the Olu Awoyinfa Annual Lecture, featuring the Induction Ceremony for New Corporate Members of the Nigerian Society of Engineers through our great NSE Ikeja Branch.
Today, we gather not merely to celebrate professional advancement, but to honour a legacy, inspire a new generation of engineers, and reaffirm our collective commitment to shaping the future through excellence, innovation, and professionalism.
The Legacy of Engr. Emmanuel Oluwafemi Awoyinfa
This annual lecture bears the name of a man whose life exemplified these ideals: Engr. Emmanuel Oluwafemi Awoyinfa, FNSE, FAEng, fondly known as Engr. Olu Awoyinfa. A distinguished engineer, visionary leader, and institution builder, his contributions to the engineering profession remain etched in the history of our Society and our nation.
Born on Monday, June 1st, 1942—a date that holds special significance for me personally, as we share the same birthday—Engr. Awoyinfa and I are connected by more than a date on the calendar. It is a reminder that destiny often leaves subtle footprints across generations. Every year, as June 1st approaches, I am reminded of the remarkable life of a man whose vision continues to guide us today.
Until his passing on Tuesday, August 15th, 2017, Engr. Awoyinfa dedicated over five decades to advancing engineering practice, professional development, and institutional growth in Nigeria. His professional journey was marked by service, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
He served as Secretary General of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, co-founded the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers (NSChE), and became its pioneer National Publicity Secretary. Yet perhaps one of his most enduring legacies was his vision for a vibrant engineering community within Ikeja and its environs.
The Birth of “The Branch to Beat”
That vision gave birth to what we proudly know today as the NSE Ikeja Branch. In July 1992, a group of engineers living and working within this axis came together to pursue the establishment of a second NSE Branch in Lagos State. Through determination, collaboration, and professional conviction, their aspiration became reality. On January 31st, 1993, the NSE Ikeja Branch was formally recognised by the Nigerian Society of Engineers.
More than three decades later, that vision continues to flourish. What began as an idea has become a centre of professional excellence, leadership development, innovation, and service. Indeed, it is because of pioneers such as Engr. Awoyinfa that we proudly uphold our identity as “The Branch to Beat.”
Engr. Awoyinfa understood something that remains profoundly relevant today: engineering is not merely about designing structures, systems, or processes—it is about creating possibilities for future generations. It is about building institutions that outlive individuals, solving problems that matter, and leaving society better than we found it.
Theme: Engineering the Future with Excellence, Innovation & Professionalism
That understanding resonates strongly with the theme of this year’s lecture: Engineering the Future with Excellence, Innovation & Professionalism.
This theme is not merely aspirational; it is a call to action. Across the world, engineers are redefining how societies function. Emerging technologies, artificial intelligence, smart infrastructure, renewable energy systems, advanced manufacturing, digital transformation, and sustainable development are changing the way we live, work, and interact. The future is being engineered today.
The question before us is not whether change will occur. The real question is whether we, as engineering professionals, will lead that change with competence, creativity, integrity, and purpose.
The Three Pillars
Excellence remains the foundation of engineering relevance. In an increasingly competitive and interconnected world, technical competence can no longer be optional; it must be our standard. We must continually invest in knowledge, research, lifelong learning, and the pursuit of global best practices.
Innovation must become our mindset. Nigeria’s developmental challenges demand more than conventional solutions. They require engineers who can think differently, adapt quickly, embrace technology, and transform ideas into sustainable outcomes that improve lives and strengthen our economy.
Professionalism must remain our compass. As engineers entrusted with public safety, infrastructure development, industrial growth, and national progress, we carry immense responsibility. Ethical conduct, accountability, discipline, and adherence to professional standards must continue to define our practice.
Together, these three pillars—Excellence, Innovation, and Professionalism—form the foundation upon which the future of engineering must be built.
As a Branch, we remain committed to nurturing engineers who embody these values. Through mentorship, capacity development, strategic partnerships, knowledge-sharing platforms, and professional engagement, we will continue to empower our members to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.
Charge to the New Inductees
To our new inductees, I offer my warmest congratulations. Today marks an important milestone in your professional journey. Your admission into corporate membership signifies recognition of your achievements, but it also represents a greater responsibility.
You are inheriting a profession built by men and women of vision, sacrifice, and service. You are becoming custodians of a legacy that demands excellence in practice, innovation in thinking, and professionalism in conduct.
As you take your place within our professional community, remember that the future of engineering will not be shaped by chance. It will be shaped by engineers who are willing to lead, innovate, and serve with integrity.

To the Keynote Speaker, Engr. Odukoya Olusesan, FNSE, a mentor and distinguished professional leader, I extend my profound appreciation for your presence and for the depth of insight and value you have brought to this programme through your contribution.
I also wish to especially acknowledge and express my deep-rooted appreciation to the Guest Speaker, my life partner, Mr. Ademola M. Adesalu, for his steadfast support, encouragement, and partnership, which have been a quiet but significant strength in my personal and professional journey.
My appreciation also goes to our past chairmen, leaders in the branch, special guests, fellows, members, partners, stakeholders, and indeed the Olu Awoyinfa Family, whose support continues to strengthen our Branch and the engineering profession at large. I thank you all for honouring our invitation and contributing to the success of this important discourse.
Also, special appreciation goes to the Planning Committee under the leadership of Engr. Olubunmi E. Akinboboye, MNSE, committee members, and every individual whose dedication, sacrifice, and commitment continue to enrich and sustain this annual programme.
Conclusion
As we celebrate the legacy of Engr. Olu Awoyinfa today, may we also embrace the responsibility he has passed on to us: the responsibility to build institutions, develop people, champion innovation, uphold professional standards, and engineer a future worthy of the generations that will come after us.
