The Nigerian Academy of Engineering (NAE) has secured one of the most prominent voices in global sustainable development for its upcoming high-level public NAE climate webinar on Nigeria’s climate crisis by announcing that Her Excellency Ms. Amina J. Mohammed, , Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, will deliver the keynote address at the event scheduled for Tuesday, June 16, 2026.
The session, themed “Achieving Nigeria’s Sustainability and Climate Change Goals: Challenges, Opportunities, and Practice,” is set to commence at 3:00pm West Africa Time. It will bring together an elite lineup of global and domestic environmental policymakers for what promises to be one of the most impactful climate conversations Nigeria has hosted this year.
For a nation still grappling with flooding, desertification, gas flaring and the unresolved tension between fossil fuel dependency and clean energy transition, the timing of this crucial nae climate webinar could hardly be more urgent.
The choice of Ms. Mohammed as keynote speaker is both symbolic and substantive. A distinguished Nigerian-British diplomat and environmental specialist, she currently serves as the 5th Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations and Chair of the UN Sustainable Development Group, making her one of the most powerful Nigerian voices in global governance today.
Before ascending to the heights of international diplomacy, Ms. Mohammed served her country directly; advising four successive Nigerian presidents and serving as Senior Special Assistant to the President on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), where she superintended the transparent deployment of approximately $1 billion annually in debt relief proceeds toward poverty reduction and educational access.
Between November 2015 and December 2016, she served as Nigeria’s Minister of Environment, spearheading the nation’s climate action framework, championing resource conservation and advancing domestic sustainable development policy at a critical moment in global climate negotiations.
She joined the UN in 2012 as Special Adviser to former Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, where she anchored the post-2015 development planning process — serving as the critical bridge that delivered the global consensus on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the birth of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a framework that now governs development planning in nearly every nation on earth.
Ms. Mohammed’s 30-year career across the public sector, private sector and civil society has earned her recognition that few Nigerians in any field have matched. She holds Nigeria’s prestigious Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) and the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR).
She was inducted into the Nigerian Women’s Hall of Fame in 2007, named Diplomat of the Year by Foreign Policy Magazine in 2017, profiled by Vogue as one of 13 female Climate Warriors on the global frontline, and ranked among Fortune’s World’s Greatest Female Leaders.
The high-profile virtual event will be moderated by Engr. (Mrs.) C. O. Adelowo, FAEng, Honorary Secretary of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering.
