In a significant boost to community development and education, the President of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), Engr. Dr. Adebisi Osim handed over 2,000 sandcrete blocks to Yewa Junior High School Agege, yesterday.
The donation serves as the school’s reward for clinching the 1st position at the recent FunSTEM 2.0 competition, sponsored by the Worley Foundation. The Donation of the Blocks was also sponsored by Worley.
The presentation, which forms part of Worley and APWEN’s unwavering partnership in corporate social responsibility to the host community, is aimed at assisting the school with its infrastructural development needs.
The competition, themed “Introducing Fun and Excitement into STEM Learning,” was the second edition of APWEN’s flagship FunSTEM initiative. The Lagos phase, a two-day event held on October 1, 2025, at Girls Senior High School, Agege Road, Iyana Ipaja, Agege was sponsored by the Worley Foundation.
The FunSTEM 2.0 project engaged 160 girls from 13 schools in practical, play-based activities designed to demystify Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects. Activities included demonstrations on energy generation methods and practical sessions on turning waste materials into art, all aimed at fostering innovative thinking and encouraging young girls to embrace STEM careers.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Engr. Osim commended Yewa Junior High School for their outstanding performance in the competition, and stating that the prize was a direct investment in the school’s future.
“The 2,000 sandcrete blocks we are presenting today are not just a prize; they are a tangible representation of our commitment to quality education and community growth,” said Engr. Dr. Osim. “Yewa Junior High School demonstrated exceptional brilliance and creativity at FunSTEM 2.0, and this donation will help them build a better learning environment for current and future students. We are grateful to the Worley Foundation for their continuous partnership in making STEM fun and accessible.”
The APWEN President said that the association’s FunSTEM programs are designed to inspire children across Nigeria towards STEM careers through hands-on learning, leadership development, and digital engagement, thereby promoting gender balance and inclusivity in a field vital for national development.
