The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) and some NSE Branches marked the 2025 International Day of Women and Girls in Science with inspiring events across the country aimed at encouraging young women to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
In Lagos, APWEN Lagos marked the event themed “Unpacking STEM Careers: Her Voice in Science” at Lagos State University (LASU) Epe Campus on February 11, 2025.
The event featured hands-on workshops, a faculty tour, and a public lecture designed to inspire and mentor young girls in engineering. Engr. Dr. Atinuke Wurola Owolabi, Chairman of APWEN Lagos, emphasized the importance of bridging the gender gap in STEM.
Representing Engr. Adeniyi Kemi Ogunsanya, the 1st Bashorun of Epe Land, Engr. Akintola Charles delivered an encouraging message, reflecting on the progress of women in engineering.
“When I was in school, there was only one lady in the engineering department. Seeing women actively involved in the profession today is truly inspiring,” Ogunsanya noted.
He then pledged an annual allowance of a ₦500,000 annual allowance to support female engineering students, with one student already benefiting.
LASU Epe Head of Campus, Prof. Elkanah Olaosebikan Oyetunji, commended APWEN for impactful projects embarked upon by the Chapter among which is provision of solar-powered lights that have significantly improved students’ learning experience. He also praised APWEN for mentoring secondary school students, stating that early exposure to STEM careers will help them make informed decisions about their future.

A public lecture by Engr. Dr. Mary Adedoyin, encouraged young women to embrace leadership in STEM. Hon. Mrs. Olagunjoye, a former Lagos State Commissioner for Education and now a Federal Commissioner at the National Population Commission, further supported aspiring engineers by donating JAMB forms.
Students explored various engineering disciplines, particularly Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Chemical Engineering through a faculty tour and participated in a hands-on workshop on Blinking LED technology with engineering tools.
“Seeing these machines and learning how they work has made me more interested in engineering. I now understand what I want to study,” said a secondary school student from Alaro high School.
APWEN Asaba gives Cash to Quiz winners

Meanwhile, in Asaba, APWEN Asaba Chapter under the leadership of Engr. Magadalene Demesi celebrated the International Day of Women and Girls in Science with the maiden edition of the Inter-School Science Quiz Competition.
Eight public and private secondary schools participated, with students competing in Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, and Physics. They are: – Model Technical College, Asaba; Young Achievers Model School; Patricia Group of Schools; Royal Mira International College; Starlit Academy ; Okpanam High School; Niger Mixed Secondary School and Holywood International School.
Patricia Group of Schools emerged victorious, followed by Royal Mira International College and Model Technical College each receiving cash prizes. .
The immediate past Chairman of The Nigerian Society of Engineers NSE Asaba Branch, Engr. Felicia Avwenaghagha presented a lecture on the topic ”WOMEN’s LEADERSHIP IN SCIENCE AS AN ERA FOR SUSTAINABILITY”

NSE Eket Branch Sparks STEM Interest Among Students
The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Eket Branch, ignited a passion for STEM at Apostolic Science School, Esit Urua-Eket, during a February 12th STEM Day visit. Branch Chairman, Engr. Edima Ekanem, led the charge, emphasizing the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics for national progress, particularly encouraging young women to explore these fields. Engr. Ekanem highlighted the gender gap in STEM and the NSE’s commitment to nurturing young talent through its “Catch Them Young” initiative. She challenged students to embrace a problem-solving mindset and pursue excellence in STEM.
Engr. Emmanuel Akpekong Sam, General Secretary, discussed the evolving landscape of engineering, urging students to connect their talents with modern challenges. He explained that engineering extends beyond traditional construction to encompass innovation in areas like artificial intelligence and renewable energy. He outlined key engineering disciplines, helping students identify their passions and envision their contributions to technological advancements. Engr. Mary Umoh shared her inspiring journey, emphasizing hard work, resilience, and a love of learning. She encouraged students, especially girls, to persevere, promising that the rewards of a STEM career are substantial.
The event was attended by school staff and professionals from diverse fields. The engaging session left students motivated to explore the vast potential of STEM.
