Engineers Honour Honour Gbenga Daniel at Distinguished Lecture

One of the most distinguished gifts one can receive is to be honoured by his colleagues. And this was exactly what happened in case of Otunba (Sen) Gbenga Daniel yesterday as the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers, NIMechE Honoured him with the 2023 election.

Mechanical Engineering Distinguished Lecture, MEDL is one of the most anticipated events organised by the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers, NIMechE. It is an venue to celebrate distinguished Engineers that have accomplished greatness in their chosen profession and impacted the nation through the practice of the mechanical engineering. Be it Public or private sector. Indeed, and event most suited for our Distinguished mechanical Engineers.

MEDL is has also become a fora where critical issues affecting the nation and taken through engineers’ telescope. During the event a distinguished Fellow shares his knowledge, experience as applied to society challenges. Various speakers has been selected in the past while various distinguished engineers have been honour at each edition of the event.

This year, Otunba (Sen) Gbenga Daniel, an Engineer and a Fellow of Nigerian Society of Engineers, NSE, Nigerian Academy of Engineering, NAE and Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers, NIMechE was the distinguished Speaker. he spoke on

In attendance are eminent personalities from across the country who grace the event.


As a Governor of Ogun State, Daniel, an Engineer, a Technocrat and a staunch Nationalist has left his name in sand of time as result of the many positive reforms. According to several testimonies on records, his administration remain a reference point in the history of the Gateway State as he left his footprints in the annals of the nooks and crannies of the State

He joined an Engineering firm; H.F. Schroeder (W.A.) Limited in his early years and rose to the level of the Deputy Managing Director thus becoming the first African to occupy such position. He left Schroeder and founded Kresta Laurel Limited (KLL) an Electro-mechanical Engineering company that specializes in elevators, overhead travelling cranes and hoists. He is also the Founder of Conference Hotels (CH) a first class brand in the hospitality industry and he is on the board of several companies.

In 1975, Daniel was declared Mastermind of the Year 1975 in an NTA Quiz programme as a 19 year old under-graduate at the University of Lagos and the best Student in Mechanical Engineering in 1979.

Some of the laudable project executed by him as governor are: The dualization of the Sagamu-Abeokuta expressway, Construction of stadia in the three senatorial districts of the state one of which was the Gateway International Stadium Ijebu-Ode that played host to the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup which was held in Nigeria, International Markets at Sagamu, Ilaro and Owode-Yewa among others.

Otunba Gbenga Daniel prioritized education during his administration with some of the following giant strides: Founded the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) which is the first in Nigeria; second in Africa and eighth in the world. Established four different Polytechnics and some other institutions; built the NYSC permanent orientation camp in Sagamu which was adjudged as the best in Nigeria; Implemented the multi-campus system of the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) and moved the Univeristy to her present permanent site at Ago-Iwoye.

Otunba Gbenga Daniel initiated the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model  that attracted several businesses into the State as evidenced in the array of companies springing-up at the Sagamu Interchange area of the State including but not limited to; Nestle Plc, Emzor Pharmaceutical Plc, Coleman Wires and Cables, Honeywell Mills, Cway Nigeria, Nigeria Breweries, Apple and Pear etc.

The above few accomplishments during his administration earned him the prestigious ‘Best Governor of the Year’ award for 3 consecutive period in; 2003, 2004 and 2005.


As a Philanthropist of repute, Otunba Gbenga Daniel established the Gateway Front Foundation (GFF), a nonprofit organization with the focus to empower the lower and middle-class residents of Ogun State. The foundation gave scholarships to indigenes of Ogun state studying in various tertiary institutions in Nigeria and also donated library Equipments to public schools with over 250 indigent Students being supported with various scholarships at various stages as well as empowerment packages. The foundation also embarked on free eye surgery and medical treatment for the masses.

Otunba Daniel is a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers FNSE, a Fellow of the Academy of Engineering (FAEng) and a Fellow of the Institute of Directors (FIoD) was adjusged as worthy of honour by the Nigerian Institution of mechanical Engineers.

Engr Olusegun Faluyi, FNSE, FNMecheE, Past President of NSE, COREN and Nigerian Academy of Engineering on November 10th 1995. He spoke on Topic Engineering and People Oriented Development.

Engr (Dr) Raphael Adeola Alabi, FNSE, OON, FNIMechE , a Past Chairman of Guinness Nigeria PLc and past Chairman of Manufactring Association of Nigeria, MAN, on November 8th 1996. He spoke on Topic: Industrialisation in Nigeria, the place of Mechanical Engineers..

Engr (Prince) G. T. Adeniyi FNSE, FNIMechE , a former director Engineering Services, Power Holding Company of Enginer Plc, on November 27th 1997. He spoke on Topic: After A century of Electricity industry in Nigeria: Wither do we go.

Engr Dr V. N. Ozobia, FNSE, FNIMechE, former managing Director Chief Executive officer Nigerdock PLC on November 20th 1998. He spoke on the maritime industry in Nigeria: Growth in Nigeria.

Engr Joseph O. Makoju, FNSE, FNIMechE, OFR, Former MD/CEO WAPCO, Former MD/CEO PHCN, Former SSA to the president an commander in Chief of Nigeria, on November 19th 2004. he spoke on Rehabilitating, Reforming and Restructuring the power Sector: The journey so far.

Engr Bolanle A. Ayodele, FNSE, FNIMechE, Managing Director / Chief Executive officer KRPCNNPC on April 25th 2013. He spoke on Domestic Refining- panacea for sustainable supply of petroleum products.

Engr prof. Steve Nwachuckwu Ojobor FNSE, FNIMechE, Dean, School of Engineering, Caritas University, Amorji Nike Enugu State. On August 7th 2014. He spoke on The Advancing Engineering Frontiers and the illusions of the under development countries.

Engr Aminu jalal, FNSE, FNIMechE, FNIM, Chief Pioneer of Automotive Polices of Nigeria and Director General of the national Automotive Council of Nigeria, on may 13th 2015. He spoke on the Automotive industry and Nigeria’s industrialisation.

Engr Dr Maikanti Kachalla baru, FNSE, FNIMechE, Group Managing Director NNPC, on July 25th 2018 He spoke on Fast tracking the Paradigm shift from Fossil Fuel Driven Economy to Renewable Energy

Engr Ahmed Kadi Amshi, FNSE, FNIMechE, on November 4th 2022. He spoke on Leadership Qualities and Skills for Effective management of Divisions of the Nigerian Society of Engineers.
