Winners Emerge at Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers Design competition

…Winners get N600,000 Prize money
The Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers (NICE) for the first time organised a national Open Defecation Design Competition for all Civil Engineering Students in Tertiary Institutions.

The competition was conducted in Asaba, the Delta State capital recently under the leadership of the National Chairman of the Institution, Engr. Dr. Jang Tanko, FNSE, FNICE.

The programme, apart from helping to curb open defecation in Nigeria with its attendant health hazards, was also aimed at catching the Civil Engineers young.

The programme, which was well coordinated by Engr. (Dr) Omolola Adetona, the National Vice Chairman and Chairman Professional Development Committee (PD), had 19 participants that made design submissions.

The 19 design submissions from all over Nigeria were shortlisted to 5 top designs after serious and detailed scrutiny by well selected Distinguished Panel of Judges. These 5 were invited and sponsored to Asaba for the Grand Finale, which took place in the presence of over 200 students and Elders of the Institution.

The Panel of Judges that consisted of Top Civil Engineers in the Academia and the Industry were drawn from across the Six Geopolitical Zones of the country to make up the Panel, included a Past National Chairman and Former Executive Director Projects, New Nigeria Development Company (NNDC), Engr. B. Ojum, FNSE, FNICE

The Panel of Judges had scorecards for each presentation.

On the result from the competition, David Akanmu from University of Lagos won the First Prize worth N250,000.00, an Award Plaque and Certificate of Participation to all team Members.

Olajuwon Olaniyi from Lagos State Polytechnic won the Second Prize worth N150,000.00, an Award Plaque and Certificate of Participation while the Third Prize valued N100,000.00 was won by Joseph Oladiti from Federal University of Technology Akure, alongside an Award Plaque and Certificate of Participation to all Team Members

Similarly, Josephine Adah, from University of Nigeria , Nsuka took the Fourth Prize worth N50,000.00, with an Award Plaque and Certificate of participation to all Team Members while the Fifth Prize valued N50,000, went to Reuben Victor from Rivers State University, Port Harcourt together with an Award Plaque and Certificate of Participation as well.

A Past National Chairman of the Institution, Engr. HOB Lawal, FNSE, FNICE, presented prizes to the 4th and 5th Awardees, while, Engr. Dr. Tanko Jang, FNSE, FNICE, the National Chairman of the Institution, presented the Prizes to the First, Second and the Third positions respectively. They have all been given their cash prizes.

5. Engr Felix Oginni, FNSE, FNICE – LOC Chairman, 2012 NICE Conference & AGM

6. Engr. Musa Karry – FNSE, FNICE, Past Chairman, NICE, Kano Chapter Chairman

7. Engr Linda Elesa, FNIEE – Chairman, NIEE, Abuja Chapter

8. Engr. Aramide Adeyoye, FNSE, FNICE- Lagos State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure

9. Engr. Dr. Atilade Oshoniyi, FNSE, FNICE

10. Engr Okey Ezema, FNSE, FNICE – Past Chairman, NICE Jos Chapter

11. Engr Dr. Omolola Adetona – National Vice Chairman, NICE – Secretary

The National Chairman, NICE, Engr. Dr. Tanko Jang, FNSE, FNICE

Engr. David Boaz, FNSE, FNICE – NICE Executive Secretary

Engr. Kelani Dawood, FNICE – NICE Kaduna Chapter also served as Advisers to the Committee.

However, one of the Panel of Judges promised Job Opportunities to all the contestants whenever they are ready, while some others made pledges and donations.
