Strict adherence to standards has been the secret of the successes recorded in the oil and gas industry- Engr Seun Faluyi

Engr. Seun Faluyi, the Chairman, Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineering (NIMechE), Codes and Standards Committee, on has said strict adherence to codes and standards is necessary for Nigeria industrialisation.

Faluyi said this at the just concluded International Code Council-Nigeria National Chapter (ICC-NNC) 2nd Education seminar with the theme: `Developing and Implementing Modern Building Codes for Resilience and Sustainability.’

He said industrialisation was dependent on codes and Standards while delivering a keynote address on `Application of Codes and Standards in the Design and construction of Resilience Infrastructure in the Oil and Gas Industry.

According to him, in the oil and gas industry, if one does not build according to standards, the consequences are usually huge in terms of loss of lives, finance and environmental disasters.

“The reason why the companies follow those standards in oil and gas is to avoid huge problems.

“If you are building anything off shore Nigeria, you first of all built it onshore then float it off shore.

“When you take it off shore and it did not fit there is a problem because you cannot bring it on shore again, which means the whole building is condemned.

“If you force it in, it will fail and people will die and pollution will occur.

“The major thing is that if you do not build according to standard, you are going to encounter failure that could be life threatening.

“Strict adherence to codes and standards has been the secret of the successes recorded in the oil and gas industry over the years.

“This can be replicated in other aspects of our nation’s life to kick-start the industrialisation of the country,’’ he said.

Faluyi said that the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) had realised that industrialisation is dependent on codes and standards and were focusing on it to move the nation forward.

According to him, once a company produces according to codes and standards it will not need to think of what it will cost to produce the next one.

He said that customers would accept the products and would keep on patronising them as they see the business outfit as ethically motivated and trusted.

Engr Faluyi, who is also the MD Offshore Dimensions Limited said that engineering standard was universal and whatever was produced and built according to codes and standards was accepted anywhere else in the world because the standards were international standards.

He said that Nigerians were innovative and needed to scale up to make their innovations cheaper and more available.
