Journey so far
I thank God on behalf of members of the Nigeria Society of Engineers Houston Branch for this day of the inauguration of the Nigeria Society of Engineers Houston Branch. I thank, my brother, Engr. Adekunle Mokuolu, President, Nigerian Society of Engineers and the members of Council of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) whose vision is materializing today.
Our journey started on September 10, 2018, when Engr Mukuolu, the then Deputy President and President-Elect of NSE met with Bayode Atanyebi and myself in Spring Texas to share the dream of implementing the formation of international branches for the NSE starting in the UK and the USA.
The prospective US locations he had in mind were Houston, New York and
Los Angeles. He informed us that the NSE had been working closely with the President Buhari’s administration to high grade the involvement of Nigeria Engineers in the development of our nation.
He anticipated an enactment of a new policy on engineering contracts awards by the Nigerian government. The Presidential Executive Order for Planning and Execution of Projects, Promotion of Nigerian Content in Contracts and Science, Engineering and Technology was pronounced in February 2018.
The key message of this order is that indigenous companies and content are to be preferred over their foreign counterparts.
Today, Engr. Mokuolu has further educated us on the nuance of this Presidential Order 5. In line with the, spirit of this order, the focus of the NSE Houston Branch is the open opportunities for NSE members in the US to be aware and ready to participate in the growth of our country Nigeria and to provide a channel for companies in Nigeria and engineers in Nigeria to access the know-how and technological resources present in the USA. Engr. Mokuolu is encouraging us as engineers to take advantage of this new era for the development our professional practice for the benefit of Nigeria.
The Houston Branch also aims to serve young engineers through mentoring, technical support, knowledge and experience sharing and professional guidance. We are looking forward to working closely with the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE).
We are very pleased to have the NSBE Texas Southern University (TSU) Chapter President, Mr. Olanrewaju Oluleye and the Secretary, Mr. Precious Oguonu present and participating in this our inauguration ceremony. We anticipate building a very strong relationship with NSBE going forward.
The Nigerian Society of Engineers Houston Branch was registered in the State of Texas on March 23, 2018 as a non-profit professional organization. The first General Meeting was held on April 20, 2018 at the conference room of the Department of Engineering at the Texas Southern University where the NSE Houston Branch Byelaws were adopted, and the officers were elected.
We expedited the processing of new members in collaboration with the NSE President, his executives and staff in Abuja. As a result, we presented 10 new NSE Corporate Members who were inducted into the society today.
I want to thank our sponsors and donors who rose to the occasion despite the short notice to render support to our new branch. I want to single out Dr. David Olowokere, Chair, TSU Department of Engineering for a special “Thank you”.
Please help me thank the Inauguration Ceremony Organizing Committee members and the members of the Houston Branch Executive Committee namely Engr. Clement Oke, FNSE, Mrs. Ngowari Diminas, Mr. Joseph Adegun, Dr. Solomon Inikori, Mr. Segun jebutu, Engr. Simon Ehimua, FNSE, Engr Ayodele Koyejo, Dr. Obinna Duru, Mr. Segun Omidele MNSE, Engr. Olu Marinho, MNSE for their tireless work and sacrifice to make this occasion to happen.
I want to thank all the NSE members and our guests here present especially those who came from Nigeria to witness this historic occasion. I wish you all a safe journey back home.
