Abstract

Nigeria possesses abundant natural resources capable of transforming the construction industry, reducing housing deficits, generating employment, promoting industrialization, conserving foreign exchange, and advancing sustainable development. However, these resources remain largely underutilized due to inadequate research, limited technological development, insufficient standardization, and weak integration into construction education and practice.

This paper advocates a national strategy that combines natural resource development, research and innovation, education and training, industrialization, and information technology to create a sustainable, affordable, and globally competitive construction sector.

Introduction

The construction industry remains one of the most important drivers of economic growth, employment generation, infrastructure development, and national prosperity. Yet Nigeria continues to rely heavily on imported technologies, foreign materials, and construction systems that are often unsuitable for local climatic, economic, and cultural realities.

Across the country, abundant natural resources such as laterite, clay, bamboo, timber, palm products, coconut fibres, raffia, stone, and agricultural residues remain largely untapped.
