From Process Lines to the Pinnacle: The Journey of Engr. Oyinda Onigbogi to Fellow of NSE

From a Process Engineer’s desk at NETCO to strategic risk governance for one of the world’s largest energy companies, Engr. Oyinda Onigbogi built her career one demanding role at a time, until she held responsibility for something that cannot afford to fail.

There is a particular kind of quiet that surrounds the engineer whose job is to make sure nothing happens. No ribbon-cutting. No headline. Just the steady, invisible discipline of holding complex machinery and human lives in careful balance, day after day, year after year.

That is the world Engr. Oyinda Onigbogi has lived in for two decades—and it is the world that has now rewarded her with the highest honour in her profession as she was inducted as a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE).

For those who have followed her journey, the only surprise is that it took this long.

The Girl from Lagos Who Asked, “What If It Fails?”

Every great career has an origin point, and hers begins at the University of Lagos, in the lecture halls of Chemical Engineering, where she first learned the language of process and risk. She later proceeded to the University of London for a Master’s in Chemical Process Engineering, sharpening a mind already inclined toward precision.

Later, Harvard Business School would add the crucial language of leadership—the art of steering people and institutions, not just systems. It is a rare engineer who builds both the technical and the strategic in equal measure, but Onigbogi did.

Cutting Her Teeth: NETCO and Terra
Her professional story did not begin in an executive corner office. It began on the engineering floor at NETCO (Nigerian Engineering and Technical Company), where she learned to think exactly like a process engineer thinks: in flows, pressures, failure points, and margins of safety.

From there, Terra Engineering Services Limited stretched her further still, sending her work across Nigeria and the United Kingdom, exposing her early to a international standard of practice that does not forgive shortcuts. By the time she walked into Chevron Nigeria Limited, she was no longer a beginner—yet Chevron would ask more of her than any prior chapter had.

What follows reads less like a résumé and more like an engineering apprenticeship told in fast motion. She moved intentionally from Process Engineer to Lead Facilities Engineer, Lead Project Engineer, and Project Manager. Soon, she transitioned to Early Concept Development Supervisor, sitting at the very birth of capital projects before a single drawing existed.

From there, her portfolio expanded into strategic advisory roles: Engineering Services Advisor, Project and Technical Services Manager, and Asset Retirement Advisor—standing at the opposite end of the lifecycle to guide ageing facilities toward responsible decommissioning. As Joint-Venture Base Business Advisor, she managed the delicate interface between Chevron and the NNPC joint-venture structure that anchors much of Nigeria’s upstream production.

Each title was not a stepping stone discarded behind her. Each was a deposit—knowledge banked and skill sharpened—toward her current role: Manager, Facilities Integrity and Reliability Management (FIRM) for Chevron Nigeria and the Mid-Africa Region.

To the outsider, “Facilities Integrity and Reliability Management” sounds like corporate jargon. To the energy industry, it sounds like trust. Onigbogi now carries the responsibility of ensuring that Chevron’s producing assets across Nigeria and Mid-Africa do not fail—not the platforms, not the pipelines, nor the critical systems that, if they falter, endanger lives, environments, and communities. She is the architect of the risk frameworks, regulatory compliance, and governance structures that decide how and when inspection and maintenance happen across an ageing, complex portfolio.

It is the kind of job where success is silence. Where the only loud day is the day something goes wrong—and her entire career has been built to make sure that day never comes.

Even with that weight on her shoulders, Onigbogi has made room for the women coming up behind her. As a Committee Member of the NSE Victoria Island Branch and an Executive Committee Member of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) Victoria Island Chapter, she has poured herself into mentorship and STEM development for girls. She understands, perhaps better than most, that the pipeline into engineering does not start at the interview table. It starts years earlier, with a young girl who needs to be told that this world belongs to her, too.

The Nigerian Society of Engineers does not hand out its Fellowship lightly. It is strictly reserved for those whose careers have not just lasted, but truly mattered—leaders who have shaped the profession as much as the profession shaped them. In conferring the FNSE on Engr. Oyinda Onigbogi, the Society is not crowning a single moment. It is recognizing a magnificent full arc: from a young process engineer asking careful questions at NETCO, to a regional risk leader holding the integrity of an entire energy infrastructure in her hands.

The FIRM role was where her preparation arrived. The Fellowship is where it has, at last, been confirmed.
