Engineers have been advised to adopt a “Growth Mindset”, refine their skills sets to remain relevant in an increasingly tech-driven world, reports, Isqil Najim
This was a part of the message from Engr. Valerie Ifueko Agberagba, FNSE, general Manager, Generation Projects NDPHC, while making presentation titled “The Growth Mindset: Lifelong Learning and Skill Diversification”. at NSE Abuja’s YEFON June General meeting on Thursday 19th 2025.
Engr. Agberagba, who has also served as Vice President of WFEO and NSE, and President of APWEN, highlighted the urgent need for this shift.
She drew attention to an alarming statistics, stating that “65% of present engineering skills will be irrelevant by 2030” , according to the World Economic Forum, and that “Automation and AI will transform 45% of jobs by 2030, impacting traditional roles”.
To navigate these impending changes, Engr. Agberagba emphasized the demand for “T-shaped engineers”—professionals with deep knowledge in their field complemented by broad adaptability.
Quoting a 2024 ASCE report , she explained that “Engineers with diversified skills will earn twice more” , and that adaptability is crucial in combating youth unemployment.
A fixed mindset, she explained, is the “belief that abilities are static. According to her, this limits personal and professional growth,” often leading to avoidance of challenges and giving up easily.
In contrast, a growth mindset, she said, is the “belief that abilities develop through dedication and hard work. Embrace challenges and learn from failures”. This includes persisting despite setbacks, and learning from criticism, she explained.
The Former World federation of Engineering organisations, WFEO Vice President warned engineers that Lifelong learning is not merely an option but a necessity for continuous professional upgrade. According to her, “Formal education is just the start. Continuous learning is essential.
She advised engineers to “map skills with industry gaps”. She recommended taking advantage of numerous online platforms like Coursera and edX for specialized skills such as Python or Renewable Energy Systems , and pursuing industry-recognized certifications like PMP or AWS Cloud.
Engr. Agberagba also cited the scientific backing for lifelong learning, explaining that MRI scans can detect structural and functional changes in the brain associated with learning.
To achieve skill diversification, Agberagba advocated for the concept of what she described as “T-Shaped Engineer”. According to her, this involves possessing deep knowledge in engineering field alongside developing broad skills such as data analytics, AI/ML, cybersecurity, and CAD/BIM software. Additionally, she highlighted the importance of essential soft skills like communication, problem-solving, leadership, and adaptability, and encouraged cultivating an entrepreneurial spirit.
Engr. Agberagba urged engineers to leverage on Nigeria’s vast opportunities across various sectors. Stating that the country offers many numerous opportunities for exploit. She identified key areas such as infrastructure (roads, rail projects like Lagos Blue Line, power generation) , oil and gas (energy transition and process optimization) , renewable energy (solar, wind, and hydro projects) , and the digital economy (Fintech, AgriTech, and EduTech).
To To Young engineers, Agberagba provided practical steps for them to follow so as not to be left behind in a growing career landscape.
- Identify Gaps: Assess skills against industry demands and review job descriptions.
- Set SMART Goals: Create specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound learning goals.
- Network: Connect with senior engineers and mentors via platforms like NSE or LinkedIn.
- Side Projects: Apply new skills to personal projects and consider pro-bono work for experience.
- Seek Feedback: Actively ask for constructive criticism for continuous improvement.
Agberagba offered solutions for overcoming resource constraints (utilize free online resources, grants) , imposter syndrome (focus on progress, seek peer support) , perseverance (“learning is a marathon. Consistent effort yields lasting results”) , access to quality training (accredited local providers or global MOOCs) , and economic pressures (diversify income streams like freelancing).
There’s need to stay relevant in an era of rapid technological change. Exercise your brain with continuous learning. Be a T-Shaped Engineer”. She said,
“Your mindset determines whether you’ll design the future or the future will design you” , she warned.
“Embrace the growth mindset as your career cornerstone. Continuously learn and diversify your skill set. Position yourself at the forefront of Nigeria’s development. Be the adaptable, innovative engineer shaping a prosperous future for Nigeria”. She concluded.
