Brain Gain: Chinese Experts Return Home to Drive National Technological Ambition Amidst US Tech Competition

After more than a decade in the United States, Chinese nuclear physicist Liu Chang, whose research has been crucial in the journey to achieve fusion energy, has left Princeton University for a position at Peking University in Beijing, thereby joining the growing list of highly skilled chinese returning to their homeland, in a wave of Brain Gain.

Last month, Liu joined the Institute of Heavy Ion Physics at Peking University’s School of Physics as an assistant professor. The Plasma specialist will pursue magnetic confinement on mission to make nuclear fusion a reality.

Liu focuses on mitigating energy leakage, particularly runaway electrons, in magnetic confinement fusion devices, a crucial step in making nuclear fusion a practical and sustainable energy source, will now be pursued within China’s academic landscape.

Research by Liu has been published in top academic journals in his field, such as Physical Review Letters and Nuclear Fusion. His return signifies a major boost to China’s fusion research capabilities, a field of research China is heavily investing in.

Liu became one of the highly skilled Chinese scientists and researchers returning home to contribute to their China’s Technology ambition.

Artificial intelligence expert Tingwen Huang, a highly cited researcher who spent over two decades of experience at Texas A&M University in Qatar, has returned to China to become a chair professor at Shenzhen University of Advanced Technology. Huang joined the University in late 2024 in its computer science and control engineering school, according to his faculty profile on the university’s website..

Huang’s expertise in intelligent control, optimization, and complex systems dynamics, particularly his application of sophisticated mathematical principles to AI, neural networks, and computational systems, is highly valued. His work on enabling autonomous systems to remain safe, stable, and robust in uncertain environments, encompassing applications ranging from self-driving cars to satellites and complex supply chains, will contribute significantly to China’s advancements in these critical areas, which are viewed as central to future economic and strategic dominance.

He has published nearly 700 papers, with about half appearing in top-tier engineering and artificial intelligence journals. His work has been cited more than 44,000 times on Google Scholar, earning him an H-index of 106 – a measure of his broad impact across multiple fields.

South China Press also Reported that “Tsinghua University chip expert Sun Nan’s return to China went largely unnoticed the prestigious university in Beijing put a social media spotlight on the professor who has helped create more than 50 cutting-edge chips in a little over four years.”

According to an article published on Tsinghua’s social media account, Sun came back with the hope of “training chip professionals for China and solving the manufacturing problems of mid- and high-end chip technology”.

Sun’s impactful work at Tsinghua has already yielded significant results, with his team developing high-performance circuit design technologies integrated into over 50 chips. These chips, used in a wide range of vital sectors including power grids, high-speed rail, and electric vehicles, have achieved import substitution and even surpassed foreign counterparts in some key technical aspects, showcasing China’s rapidly growing prowess in chip design and manufacturing, an industry essential to every other modern technological advancement.

Beyond these prominent examples, numerous other experts are reportedly returning to contribute their diverse skills and specialized knowledge to China’s national development.

Sun Shao-Cong, a leading cancer scientist, returned to China after three decades of distinguished work in the United States to establish a new lab in Beijing, following what sources indicate were investigations by the US government.

French physicist and Nobel laureate Gérard Mourou joined Peking University’s school of physics as a chair professor, where he is expected to play a “crucial role” in the establishment of an institute focused on research and international collaborations.

Award-winning mathematicians Kenji Fukaya and Ma Xiaonan have also relocated to China, joining Tsinghua University, further bolstering the nation’s mathematical research capabilities.

Yan Ning, a highly respected structural biologist, has returned to China to become a professor at Tsinghua University. She is known for her research on membrane proteins and has made significant contributions to the field.

Professor Pan Jianwei, a pioneer in quantum information science, has returned to China to lead a team at the University of Science and Technology of China. He is a pioneer in quantum information science and has made breakthroughs in quantum communication and computing.

Professor Zhang Wenhong, an infectious disease expert returned to China to lead the Department of Infectious Diseases at Huashan Hospital in Shanghai. He played a crucial role in China’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Shi Yigong, a structural biologist returned to China to become the president of Westlake University. He is known for his research on protein structures and has made significant contributions to the field of drug discovery.

Award-winning Chinese mathematician Ma Xiaonan left his decades-long career in Europe to join Nankai University in Tianjin, according to an announcement on the university’s website.

After more than 20 years in Britain as a prominent physicist dedicated to unveiling the secrets of superfast fluids, Zhang Yonghao has joined China’s new national hypersonic laboratory in Beijing.

Wang Xujia, a renowned Chinese-Australian mathematician and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Sciences, returned to his hometown of Hangzhou to join China’s prestigious Westlake University after nearly three decades abroad. Chen Deliang also returned to China to take up a full-time position at Tsinghua University. He is a leading climate expert and fellow of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

Zhao Mang, 29, has become Wuhan University’s youngest full professor. After eight years of overseas study in cryptography, he returns to bolster China’s cybersecurity.

His expertise lies in applied cryptography, crucial for protecting information and national security, with applications ranging from secure online banking to encrypted messaging. Wuhan University emphasizes cryptography as a “core discipline” facing increasing demand and challenges. He aims to address national needs and navigate the evolving international cybersecurity landscape

The return of these highly skilled individuals reflects a broader and deliberate national strategy to attract and retain top talent.
