With a deep sense of loss but total submission to the will of the Almighty, we regret to announce the demise of a member of the technical board of the Engineering Materials Development Institute, Akure, and Immediate Past president of Association of professional Women Engineers of Nigerian (APWEN), Engr. (Mrs.) Funmilola OJELADE.

Engr. Mrs. Funmilola Ojelade was born on 15th October 1967 in Ibadan, Oyo State and hails from Ife-East Local Government Area of Osun State. She possessed a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the Obafemi Awolowo University and the University of Lagos respectively. She also obtained another M.Sc. degree in Business & Management (Finance Track) from Harvard University in 2021.

In her professional career, she served as the National Vice President of APWEN. She also attained the office of the National President of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN).

Funmilola Ojelade is a  Women-in-Tech-Role advocate. The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) is a nonprofit, nongovernmental educational and service organization that is focused on advancing the professional development of female engineers, technologists and scientists. APWEN is the umbrella body of all professional female engineers in Nigeria with membership of about 3000.

As 16th  President of APWEN, she introduced the “APWEN Town & Gown” mentoring and Capacity Building Program for young engineers to retain young women in the engineering profession and aid gender diversity in technology jobs. The initiative created a pool of ready-now female engineers for the industry and secured employment for several with the potential for hundreds more.

Earlier, Funmilola was the Chairman of the Abuja Chapter of APWEN (2011 – 2013). The Chapter experienced total rebranding during her tenure; her invaluable works and impressive projection of the Association earned her the position of the first ever APWEN Brand Ambassador in October 2014.

Outside of APWEN, Funlola, as she is sometimes called, headed the Industrial Waste Management unit at the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Plc., the sole manufacturer of banknotes in West Africa. She has progressed through the Company’s Supply Chain, handling various responsibilities in R&D, Quality Control, Production planning, Procurement and Project Management.

On the completion of her Master’s degree in Finance from Harvard University, she received the Dean’s List Certificate for Academic Achievement. She has taken several career enhancement courses including Supply Chain Management program at the Cranfield University in the UK.

In May 2021, she received the Derek Bok Prize for Public Service from Harvard University, for her outstanding works in Nigerian communities.

She was appointed a Member of the Board of Directors (Technical) Engineering Materials Development Institute, Akure on 30th September 2021. Funmilola was an independent Non-Executive Director of Industrial & Medical Gases.

She was a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers and a chartered Engineer registered with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).

She departed this sinful world in the early hours of Wednesday 22nd March,2023. We pray the Almighty God to grant her eternal rest and give the family and the entire NASENI and engineering family the fortitude to bear this monumental loss.
