    The Governing Council of University of Abuja, on Wednesday, recently announced the approval of the the promotion of 44 academic staff to the rank of professor and associate professor. A statement released by the Director of Public Relations of the university, Dr Habib Yakoob, “The promotions were considered and approved by the Council at its 92nd and 93rd Regular Meetings, which was held on Thursday 30th and Friday 31st March 2022, and Tuesday 28th and Wednesday 29th June 2022, respectively. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah, who was quoted in the statement, noted that the promotion of the members of staff was a testimony to their continued dedication, hard work and discipline.

    One of those promoted is Engr Kafaya Olafunke Adeyemi, a Mechanical Engineer and co-Chairman NIMechE Journal Committee.          

    Engr Professor Kafayat Olafunke Adeyemi is a teacher and a mentor. Born in Zaria Kaduna state, her Primary and Secondary school education were in Bauchi at Army Chidren School and Federal Government Girls College respectively. As someone with a passion for mathematics and physics, she proceeded to study Mechanical Engineering at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) Bauchi and  graduated in 1997. She did her compulsory youth service in Katsina state and upon completion gained employment as a Production Engineer with the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON). That same year she enrolled for her Masters degree programme in Mechanical Engineering (Energy studies) at Bayero University Kano. After the  completion of her programme, she began her academic career in ATBU Bauchi in 2003. In 2008, she transferred her service to University of Abuja to continue her academic/research work. She is the first  female to bag a PhD in the Department of Mechanical Engineering Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi. 2013. She has carried out research works in her field and has to her credit a number of publications.

    This can be viewed in google Scholar, Researchgate as well as Publons. Engr Dr Kafayat Adeyemi  also served as a senate member and the Director, Energy Research Centre University of Abuja. She has also served as Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering University of Abuja.

    Outside the University environment, Dr Adeyemi was an International consultant to GIZ Uganda from 2011 to 2013 for the development of a number of sustainable energy projects including off grid electricity generation from solar and improved cook stove projects. She remains at the fore front conducting and promoting consulting assignments.

    Engr Dr Adeyemi is a registered member of the Council for Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), a member of Solar Energy Society of Nigeria, a member of the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) and a Mentor at the Council of Women in Energy and Environmental Leadership (CWEEL). She has served and is still serving the Nigerian Society of Engineers at Branch and National levels. She is the Chief Examiner for Mechanical division in the B1/B2 professional examination.

    Besides her love and fervor for the field, she finds the most pleasure in travelling with her family and amongst other things, trying new recipes in the kitchen to improve her culinary skills. She is married and blessed with children.
