The Engineering Regulation Monitoring, ERM, of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, COREN Lagos has conducted an inspection visit to the site of Collapsed 3 Storey Building at Sonuga Street Mushin, Lagos. on Monday 26th September 2022, Isqil Najim reports.

The visit was led by the Chairman ERM committee chairman, Engr Joseph Adeyemi and COREN Lagos Zonal Coordinate Engr. Engr. Tomide Akinnawo along with other committee members.

MyEngineers recalls that a 3- Storey building partially collapsed on Friday 23rd of September, 2022 around 12.00pm. 4 persons were confirmed dead while one was rescued and is receiving medical attention. The building was located at Oye Sonuga Street Palm Avenue, Mushin Lagos State.

During the visit, the team interrogated eye witnesses as well as the caretaker of the property. It was gathered that the main building was constructed over 27 years ago while the collapsed part was reported to have been constructed about 10 years ago.

The preliminary observation of the team shows that the on-site exhibited a visible poor drainage system. It also noted the possibility of the weakening of the foundation. The team expressed concern about the state of surrounding buildings and raised integrity questions. At the time of visitation total and control demolition of the remaining part of the building not yet collapsed was ongoing.
Some materials samples of broken concrete and reinforcement steel were, however, recovered from the site for further investigation. While a full report is sent to COREN for consideration.

In a related development, The ERM Team led by Engr Joseph Adeyemi also visited the site of 7 storey building at Oniru Estate, which collapsed penultimate Week. The building, which was still under construction when the unfortunate incident happened is located Opposite Simons Court, Victoria Island, Lagos State. During the visit to Oniru site, the committee observed that all structural members (columns, Beams and Slab) failed while the adjacent building was partially affected (The Roof section and part of the side wall).

The team lamented the losses of lives and expressed concern that the incessant building collapse in the country cast a dark shadow on the image of the engineers in the country. It call for awareness and sensitisation to address the menace including punishing any engineer found culpable.

Meanwhile, The General Manager of Lagos State Building Control Agency meet who met the team on Site encouraged COREN to be more active and find a lasting solution to quacks in the industry. He pledged that Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) is willing to collaborate with COREN.

..Ebonyi State technical Committee sealed two Buildings

Meanwhile, the COREN Ebonyi State technical Committee has sealed two buildings in the state for violating building codes. Today, Tuesday 27th September 2022. The committee directed the engineers in charge of the projects to present approved drawings and other documents for further investigation.
