A University of Lagos Don and Chairman of Abeokuta Branch of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Engr Dr Kolawole Adisa Olonade, has won the 2022 Prof Ayo Ogunye endowment chair in the sum of N1.5 million research grant for a research project titled, “Developing Ternary mixture of biowaste in Nigeria for Concrete Production”.
The winner was selected after rigorous selection process. At the presentation of the cheque, which was held recently at the J. F Ade Ajayi Auditorium, of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka. The Board of trustee Chairman of Professor Ayodele Francis Ogunye Trust Fund, Chief. Joseph J. Akpieyi expressed confidence that the research output will be beneficial to humanity.
Ogunye who was the pioneer Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering in UNILAG and the institution’s first Professor of Chemical Engineering was also celebrated as he clocks 80 with a book launch.: Trials, triumphs and legacy: Prof Ayodele Francis Ogunye at 80.
It has been established that a substantial quantity of earth material is consumed and various pollution is associated with cement production. It also contributes significantly to global CO2 emission. The challenge before the researchers is to find alternative material that is cheaper and less destructive to the environment. Supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) and pozzolans as partial replacement for cement in cement-based materials have the potential to mitigate emissions in cement plants. Globally acceptable SCMs such as fly ash and silica fume, are scarcely available in Africa.
Olonade and his team found cassava peel ash as potential pozzolanic material that could replace cement in concrete production by up to 20% by mas. The team also investigated Rice husk ash, coconut shell ash for use as partial replacement for cement in concrete. However, there is a challenge in availability of each of these materials. They opted to Combine them in ternary mixture as a great novel approach. A pilot structure was therefore constructed on the campus of the University of Lagos, using different proportions of the selected bio-wastes.
Olonade and his team estimated that, In the future, a cottage processing plants, based on the results from this research could be established to produce bio-pozzolan to reduce carbon footprint of concrete. With multi-faceted challenges amid rapid urbanization, the research offers a unique opportunity to develop sustainability potentials for circularity. Local material solutions can create livelihoods for circular economy, mitigating affordable housing issues, and save natural resources in building the infrastructure.

Professor Ayo Ogunye Trust Fund, University of Lagos (PAFOTFUL) was established as a result of the need to impart the nation’s engineering sector through the use of research.
