Pa Philips Bolude Oyebolu deserves more recognition from Engineers- Olumayowa Idowu

The Chairman, Nigerian Institute of Electrical Electronics Engineers, NIEEE Abeokuta Chapter, Engr.  Olumayowa Idowu has called on engineers to honour and recognize achievements of veteran engineers to demonstrate appreciation to their contributions; Isqil Najim reports.

He said this during the second edition of Bolude Oyebolu Distinguished Annual Lecture organised by the Abeokuta Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (NIEEE) in collaboration with the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Abeokuta Branch. The event was held in honour the veteran engineer as part of the activities to mark his 92nd birthday anniversary.

In his remark, the president of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, NSE, Engr Tasiu Sa’ad Gidari Wudil, represented by a former President of NSE, Engr Ademola Olorunfemi praised the contributions of Engr P. B. Oyebolu in engineering development. He challenged the engineers to rise up to the task of helping the country tackle the myriads of infrastructure challenges.

Pa Philips Bolude Oyebolu deserves more recognition from Engineers- Olumayowa IdowuAt the event which attracted dignitaries across the country including the representatives of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, COREN, Idowu said that it is in recognition of Engr. Ven. Phillips Bolude Oyebolu immeasurable contributions to the Engineering profession, that necessitated the commencement of the annual event exactly a year ago. He added that  Pa Oyebolu served as the 12th President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers between 1982 – 1983, One time Vice President of Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) including other services to the country.

Idowu who was recently honoured  at AIG/University of Oxford Public Leaders Programme observed  that it is an irrefutable fact that Papa (Engr. Ven. Phillips Bolude Oyebolu,) , whom he referred to as the Doyen of Engineering Profession in Abeokuta, has done creditably well to deserve more recognition from the upcoming and current generation of Engineers. He said Papa Oyebolu, who clocks Ninety – two this year should be celebrated while still alive. He prayed God to keep him with us till his centenary birthday celebration and even more, in sound health and more accomplishments. He urged professional bodies to honour and recognize more such veterans of engineering to appreciate their contributions to the profession and preserve their legacies for the future generation.

Various dignitaries at the event spoke glowingly of Pa Philips Bolude Oyebolu and his impact on engineering and the country in general. the president, Council for the Regulation of ENgineering in Nigeria, CORE, Engr Ali Rabiu speadoh through a National Executive member of NSE, Engr Dauda Okudugha praised the contributions of Engr Oyebolu in engineering. he reminded the engineers to be prepared for the annual COREN Assembly holding between 8 and 10 of August 2022. The National Chairman of the NIEEE, Engr Akan Michael used the opportunity to congratulate the Chapter for honoring such an illustrious ambassador of Electrical Engineering whose impacts has been felt home and abroad.

Pa Philips Bolude Oyebolu deserves more recognition from Engineers- Olumayowa IdowuOn the choice of the Theme, “Distribution Substation Enhancement As A Clue to Incessant National Grid Collapse’’, for the event, Engr Idowu said that the recent happenings in the country where National Grid is reported to collapse is an embarrassment.   According to him, the grid collapsed twice in the month of March 2022 and also twice in April 2022. Another collapse of the grid was reported on 13th June 2022, making it the fifth (5th) time in the year 2022.

He said that there is need for decentralised grid as a matter of urgency. “We also need a lot of replacement for our decaying infrastructure. We need substation enhancement, distribution substations, injection substations, transmission substations and network expansion of the transmission substations.’ He added.

It is in a bid to find lasting solutions, one of the core players in the industry, the  Chairman of the first indigenous meter manufacturing company in Nigeria MEMCOL, Engr. Kola Balogun was invited to share his perspectives wealth of experience in power sector .

He used the opportunity to  recognize in absentia, the  Former President of Nigeria, Engr. Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, who though out of the country to honour a previously scheduled engagement during this period, sent his letter of celebration of Pa Oyebolu. In his letter, Obasanjo, who is also a Fellow of NSE spoke glowingly of Pa Oyebolu.

According to the letter, Obasanjo said that, “This is indeed a special occasion worth celebrating, not only for the good fortune of having his (Engr Oyebolu) life spared by God, but also for the brilliant achievements he has recorded over the years. He (Oyebolu) has definitely come a long way in his multi faceted career as one of the foremost Nigerian Electrical Engineers and administrators. It is my prayer that the good Lord will grant him good health and divine strength in the years to come”. The ex president praised the NSE/NIEEE thoughtfulness in maintaining the  noble idea of immortalizing a patriot and a nationalist par excellence.

He thanked the Engineers, as well as other distinguished guests who have left their tight schedules to join us at this august occasion,and all those who have contributed immensely to the success of this double celebration.
