Investiture of 15th National Chairman: NIMechE to set agenda for mechanical engineering practices at Maiden Roundtable

The Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers is set for the Investiture of its 15th National Chairman, Engr (Dr) Funmilade Akingbagbohun and the 2022 National executive committee members on February 17th 2022, As part of the investiture ceremony, NIMechE is bringing together, eminent personalities in diverse industries to Maiden Edition of NIMechE Roundtable.

The NIMechE Roundtable is an assemblage of mechanical engineers with purpose of shaping the future through evaluation of yesterday and today of engineering practices. The gathering, which will be interactive and hold as part of pre-Investiture ceremony will examine various issues affecting the profession and set out to provide agenda for the next two years. Hence the theme of the Maiden Edition is: *”Agenda towards a more competitive mechanical Engineering practice”.*

A former President of Nigerian Society of Engineers and immediate past President of West African Federation of Engineering Organisations, HRH Engr Otis T. Anyaeji, will be presenting the Keynote Address at the event.

HRH Engr Anyaeji is the immediate Past President of West African Federation of Engineering Organizations, Past president of Nigerian Society of Engineers. His Royal Highness, Igwe of Okija Community has shown the capacity of Nigerian professionals to undertake the most complex projects which formerly were denied Nigerian professionals due to a perceived lack of competency and capacity.

Anyaeji has over 36 years of experience in multiple engineering sectors that includes Electric Power, Automobiles, Steel, and Oil & Gas. Prior to founding O.T OTIS, Anyaeji worked in various engineering roles for Peugeot, the Nigerian Ports Authority, and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company. He was instrumental to the establishment of the Center for Automotive Design and Development and was appointed Chairman of National Automotive Council on the backdrop of the excellent work done on the drafting of the National Automotive Policy in 1993 which was approved by the President.

He has been chairman of several institutes including pioneer chairman of Regulation and Control Committee (COREN), the Institute of Cost Appraisers &Cost Engineers, Automotive Engineers institute and the Chairman of Electric Power Foundation.

Other panelists confirmed for the event, which is the first of its kind by the institution are:

1. Professor Titilayo Akinlabi: (Education, Training of Engineers)

Professor Esther Titilayo Akinlabi is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering. She is a Director of the Pan African University for Life and Earth Sciences Ibadan (PAULESI), Nigeria. Prof. Akinlabi has previously had a decade of meritorious service at the Department of Mechanical Engineering Science, Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, University of Johannesburg (UJ), South Africa. During her period of service at UJ, she served as the Head of Department of the Department of Mechanical Engineering Science and as the Vice Dean for Teaching and Learning for the Faculty. Her research interest is in the field of modern and advanced manufacturing processes – Friction stir welding and additive manufacturing. Her research in the field of laser based additive manufacturing include laser material processing and surface engineering. She also conducts research in the field of renewable energy, and biogas production from waste.

She is a registered member of the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), Council for the Regulation of Engineering Profession in Nigeria (COREN), South African Institution of Mechanical Engineers (SAIMechE), America Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE). Prof Akinlabi has filed two patents, edited four books, published seven books and authored/co-authored over 500 peer reviewed publications.

2. Engr Prof. Toyin Ashiru,: * (Entrepreneurship and Innovation strategy)

Prof. Toyin Ashiru is a distinguished Materials and Metallurgical Engineer with a career of about 40 years that spans through Nigeria, UK, USA, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Far East, and Asia. He has utilized his diverse experiences in the academia, consulting, finance/investment entrepreneurship, and project management to provide technical advisory services for the enhancement of productivity in major oil and gas industries worldwide. He has served as expert consultant to NNPC, SHELL, CHEVRON, EXXONMOBIL, ADDAX, SAUDI ARAMCO, SABIC, SAMAREC, QATAR OIL, etc. He has also served on various technology advancement committees of the UNIDO, UNESCO and the WORLD BANK.

Toyin Ashiru is the inventor of the first known instrument for Situ Detection of Steel Cracking in Sour Petroleum Production Operations. This sophisticated microprobe device is now fully commercialized and used worldwide in the oil industries. He holds patents in the USA, UK, Brazil, Japan and of the World Intellectual Property Organization for several other inventions. He developed electroplated tin-zinc alloy coating system (USA Patent # 5,378,346, January 3, 1995).

He a Non-Executive Director of FCMB Group Plc, Chairman of CSL Stockbrokers Ltd and others. He is currently the Group Managing Director/CEO of Tricontinental Group, a first-rate Nigerian conglomerate with interests in Oil & Gas services, industrial technologies, industrial academy, properties and investments, energy and power.

3. HRH Engr Wahab Ogunbiyi,( Inventions, innovative Fabrication and manufacturing)

HRH Engr Abdul Wahab Ogunbiyi, is Oba Eleku of Odo-Eku Isin, Kwara State. Prior to ascending his forefathers throne, he accummulated over 30 years working experience as a Machines/Equipment Maintenance Engineer, Administration and a Research & Development. He has, in the course of his engineering career, designed and fabricated Shredding and Pulverizing Machines (produced); Road/Street Sweeping Machines (produced); Interlocking Brick Making Machine (produced); Hand Operated Fruits Juice Extractor (produced); Hot Air Rotary Fish Drying Plant (produced); Lagoon Weeds and Wastes Harvesting Boat (design); and E- Waste Materials Treatment Plant (design).

He has written and presented various technical papers at different fora both in Nigeria and abroad.

4. Engr. Femi Odumabo, (Policy, Globalization and Engineering Management)

Engr Odumabo is the CEO, Zenilum Company Limited. He has accumulated over 30 years of oilfield and management experience with Chevron Nigeria Limited in various capacities both in Nigeria and abroad. HE holds MSc. Mechanical/ Production Engineering. He was the first (First) Project Director, Agbami oil field operated by Chevron – part owned by indigenous company – Famfa Oil and gas Nigeria limited | Petrobras B.V. His extensive

Odumabo belongs to several professional bodies, among them; the Fellow Nigerian Society of Engineers, registered engineer with the Council of Registered Engineers of Nigeria (COREN), the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE); the Institute of Chartered Mechanical Engineers (UK), and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (US); Fellow Institute of Chartered Administrators of Nigeria (FICAN) and fellow, Nigerian Instiyution of mechanical Engineers.

5. Engr Adeoye Fadeyibi, (Public Private Sector Participation)

Adeoye Fadeyibi has over two decades of professional experience in the Power industry. He started his career at General Electric (GE) where he held different positions from 2000 to 2013 and rose to a position of Sales Director for GE Energy covering the Middle East and African Regions.Fadeyibi has served in increasingly strategic roles. These included his membership team of leaders tasked with developing Nigeria’s partnership structure to address “overall power delivery solutions” deploying his formidable project management expertise to ensure power delivery deadlines were met between 2008 – 2010.

In 2013, he was appointed Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer of Transcorp Power Limited (TPL), Ughelli, Delta State, a 1,000MW generation Company and one of the six-generation assets of the erstwhile Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN). Under his direction and a testament to his assiduous work ethics, TPL grew from 160MW of available capacity at handover (1st November 2013) to 634MW (by December 2015). After making his mark in the Generation section, Engr. Adeoye moved downstream along the Electricity Power Sector’s value chain into the Electricity Distribution sub-sector where he assumed office as the MD/CEO of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) on 1st January 2018, a position he still retains till this date.

6. Engr. Prof. Ademola Adisa Bello (professionals and professionalism with focus on NSE, NIMechE and COREN.)

Prof Ademola Adisa Bello, Former National Chairman of NIMechE is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi. His areas of specialization are in Optimization of Mechanical Design/Systems and Efficient Energy utilization. He has served and still serving the academic community as an external examiner/assessor in many universities and many professional/academic Journals. He served the ATBU as Director of Centre for Energy Research, Coordinator of postgraduate Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Head of Mechanical/Production Engineering Department and Director, Centre for Industrial Studies.

He has over seventy-five peer reviewed Journal and conference papers, eight Technical Reports and 15 Public Lectures delivered. He has been sponsoring two prizes in the Department of Mechanical Engineering since the 2012/2013 session at every convocation ceremony. He served on the Governing Council of ATBU for four years. He also served on the Council of the NSE for two years. He served on the Council of COREN for three years. He served as the 11th National Chairman of the NIMechE and have been serving on its Council since 2009. Currently, he serving on the Africa, Asia and the Pacific (AAP) Accord Council. He is Chairman, Board of Trustee, He was recently appointed as Registrar at Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, and will assume office in March 2022.

Engr Mrs Chrsitianah Olakitan Ijagbemi (Moderator)

Prof. Ijagbemi is a professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the Federal University of Technology (FUTA), Akure, Ondo State. She is a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers and a 2021 co-opted Council member of the Society. She is the First Female Professor of Mechanical Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering, FUTA and the 2nd Female in the entire Country.

She was a first female Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers (NIMechE) Akure Chapter, a former Chairman of the Akure Chapter of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) & a past Chairman of Akure Branch of the NSE. She is a fellow of Nigerian Society of Engineers and Fellows of Nigerian Institution of mechanical Engineers.

The Roundtable is powered by Toyota Nigeria Limited will be one of its kind with members expected to go home, not only intellectually and professionally satisfied, but looking ahead with renewed vigour in their practices of the Mechanical engineering whichever area of specialisation they choose.
