Environmental Engineers in Rock City: A call for Increasing Responsibility for Environmental Engineers

Between October 27th and 29th, the Foremost Environmental Engineers under the leadership of Engr Olalekan Ajani across the country gathered on Abeokuta (Rock City) for their International Conference and Annual General Meeting.

The Body founded on 12th February 1995, when there was low awareness of critical issues affecting our environment in the country, has indeed come a long way. From a group of small committed engineers determined to accentuate the roles of engineers in protection of the environment., it now has membership across the country and abroad, with presences in Abuja FCT, Ibadan, Oyo State; Asaba, Delta State; Port Harcourt, River State; Lagos State, Benin, Edo State, Owerri, Imo State; Abeokuta, Ogun State and Manchester, United Kingdom.

Currently lead by hardworking Engr Olalekan Emeka, Ajani Sulaimon, NIEE, as it is called (by Acronym) is leading the charge to ensure engineers increasing take responsibility for the preservation and protection of our environment.

This year, efforts were focused on roles of Environmental Engineers as well as the Energy situation in the country. For this reason, the Theme, “Energy Sustainability for an Improved Environment” was chosen. According to the chairman, because of importance to our city survival and economic growth.

Explaining the choice of the theme, Engr Ajani, said “In energy economics, and ecological energetic, the lower the Energy Returns on Energy Invested EROEI of a process, the lower the sustainability and the faster the fossil fuel resources are depleted. “Further, he stressed that “we must monitor this closely to achieve sustainability while reducing the carbon footprint using all possible policy framework in actualizing an improved environment”

Various speakers at the two days event including the technical Session lend credence to this through their contributions.

Reward Creativity

Prof David Omole, the Presented scary situation on our energy challenges. With Loss of over 29b dollar economic loss from unstable energy, Nigeria ha e complicated their challenge through the use of generators which gulps 14B dollars on fuel from 60m Nigerians, and manufacturing sector. This comes with the attendant health challenges. Omole, while answering questions posited that it is time to ack. It is time to Ensure Engineers find solutions to the Challenges confronting the environment, he also highlighted the need to reward creativity, especially of the youths bringing up ideas on how to tackle any of the challenges facing our Environment.

Abeokuta Engineers, under leadership of Engr Dr. Olonade was on hand to grace the event. While congratulating the hugely successful Conference, said that Environment is very dear to everyone. Whether it is Civil, mechanical, Chemical, etc, they are always connected to the environment. He calls for needs to collaborate with the Division to address various challenges.  As a result of the critical importance of the Division, he declared that Abeokuta Engineers are ready to support and work with the Environmental Division in the State to take their activities to higher level.

Speaking at the event, The Deputy Governor of the State who was the Special guest of Honour expressed her appreciation to the Institution for hosting the event in Ogin State. She commended the engineers for being at the forefront of addressing social and environmental challenges. She however noted that, Development is a function of environment, a everything we do affect the environment. therefore the Division cannot be overlooked. She called for creative solutions designed to address the identified challenges.

For policy makers, Oyedele Said that the best thing to salvage our country from its various challenges is to ensure professionals of every field are involved in politics. She maintain that there is no policies made in this country that did not receive the contributions of professionals. She advised that the technical tession at the conferences must not focus only on the problems but also spell out solutions. . We will listen to you and ensure implementation of your ideas. She declared.

To Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment

Engr Bola Olowe a former past National chairman of the Institution also spoke at the event. while Permanent secretary ministry of Environment added his voice to the call for protection of environment.

The highlight of the conference was the election of new national executive officers.
