Engineers urged to develop self-innovation skills

From the Chief Executive Officer of Sparta Contractor Nigeria Limited, Engr. (Dr.) Atilade Oshoniyi has come a charge to engineers: ‘develop self-innovation skills.

He spoke as the guest speaker at 2021 annual lecture of the Lagos branch of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE).

Oshoniyi whose virtual keynote presentation from USA, titled: “Beyond Engineering: Innovative Business Ideas,’ noted that for engineers to be successful, they need to be innovative, sighting samples of firms who have inculcated innovation into their lifestyle and are really making it big.

Specifically, he said organisations such as Spotify, worth $6billion, Uber, worth $81billion and FaceBook, worth $900billion, Twitter, Netflix, Amazon, Apple, among others all have innovation in their DNA.

“Therefore, it’s imperative for Nigerian engineers to develop innovative ideas to make more money elsewhere. Engineers must evaluate and discover themselves, we must determine intermediate call to know our skills, and we must discover our need to know undiscovered skill. By doing this, we would be able to discover new things. Innovation has made conversation possible from the USA to Nigeria.

“Engineers must position themselves to learn from the stupid things of life to be able to teach the wise,” he said.

Oshoniyi further reiterated the need for engineers to innovate through habit and positive thinking.

“You must develop power to say ‘yes’ to every ‘no,’ and say ‘no’ to every ‘yes’ because when you are saying ‘yes’ to every ‘no,’ you are innovating.

“That means you are converting the negative to positive. You must innovate to say ‘yes,’ and because there’s power in our tongue, whatever you desire, you attract.

“Nevertheless, we must innovate through within, innovate through what you know, don’t fake what you don’t know because what you know could only push you there,” he said.
