The Annual international Engineering conference of Nigerian Society of Engineers has produced the best Division and Branch at 2020 edition of of the group Dynamic competition with Chemical Division adjudged as the best Division while Victoria Island emerged the best Branch.
The Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers, also known as Chemical Division, beat over 50 other National Divisions in a wide margin to clinch the prize. Trailing behind are Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers, (Civil Division) and Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers, (Mechanical Division) in second and third respectively.
At the Branch Level, Victoria Island Branch came first among the over 90 Branches spread across the country. Following behind are Maitama Branch in Second and Kaduna Branch in third positions. Victoria Island Branch score 94.5% to clinch the top position.
Conceived by Engr. Olu Awoyinfa and Engr. Ayo Solanke in 1969, the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers (NSChE) was initially established to bring together a group of Nigerian Chemical Engineers who trained abroad and returned to Nigeria to practice. The Society was formally incorporated on 3rd December 1981. It has 12 State Chapters spread nationwide while the 13th Chapter is the NSChE USA Chapter. It also has student chapters in more than 30 tertiary institutions offering Chemical Engineering programme of studies in Nigeria. It became a Division of NSE on 5th June 1999. It is currently led by Engr Onochie Azubike Anyaoku.
NSE Victoria Island Branch was established on 12th day of November 2007, in response to the growing population of practicing Engineers within the Victoria Island community. Founded by Engr Babagana Mohammed and other senior engineers, the branch has since grown to become a reputable force in organsing innovative engineering programmes. It is currently led by Engr John Audu, a fellow of NSE.
Group Dynamic Competition was Instituted by the Council of the Nigerian Society of Engineers to provide healthy performance of the Divisions and Branches across the country in an engineering calendar year. The top three among Divisions and Branches are announced during the annual international conference with prizes awarded to the standout professional bodies. The competition was designed to keep Divisions and Branches focused on engineering and community services.
It is worth noting the differences between Branches and Divisions of Nigerian Society of Engineers. Branches are local representatives of the NSE across the country while Divisions are independent affiliates of NSE that focus on specialized Engineering disciplines. Divisions also hold the distinction of having independent National Council and Chapters across the states. Memberships of Branches is open to all but the Division memberships are open only to those in the specialization they represent. Every member of NSE is expected to be a member of at least one Division.
