APWEN launches Town and Gown South West Edition to boost capacity of Women Engineers

The much anticipated edition of APWEN Town & Gown Mentoring programme aiming to boast the professional capacity of young women engineers have kicked off with South West Edition on June 13 2020 .

The project is sponsored by  Worley Foundation as part of its commitment to support STEM Education, Diversity & Inclusion Projects that would impact communities where Worley Operates., the programme to bridge the employability gap between young female engineering graduates and the industry.

This Industry-Focused Capacity Building planned to cut across the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria is a Mentoring programme to help bridge the employability gap of young female engineering graduates, make them employable and fit for the industry.

The mission and vision of APWEN Town and Gown Series is to: Offer quality mentorship to young female engineers and the undergraduate female students in engineering. To create a pool of ready-now female engineers for the industry and excellent ground for the recruitment of young bright talents. APWEN believe carrying out this program will assist the nation to attain sustainable development goals.

APWEN President, Engr. Funmilola Ojelade FNSE in her welcome address explained the purpose of Town & Gown Series, she said the programme is targeted at the young female engineers but for gender equality, APWEN will allow a percentage of male engineers to participate.

The President of NSE, Engr. Babagana Mohammed appreciates all participants and sponsor, he said female engineers are more reliable and should be supported with the required knowledge because in the next ten to twenty years most of the present engineers will step aside for the next generation of engineers.

He commended APWEN and salute all industries present. Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, Governor State of Osun was online with some key members of his cabinet. He declared the event opened and appreciates the leadership of APWEN for this creative way of forging ahead with this initiative and Worley Foundation for their sponsorship.

Babagana  commended the instructive and laudable approach of the programme to create synergy between theory and practice and introduce young engineers to the nuances, skills and competencies that will make them better employable by the industry.

Governor Oyetola said the State of Osun is particularly happy that this it is coming at a time in their administration where frantic efforts to deliver economic transformation with the aim of making the State the commercial hub of the South West.

Mrs. Sue Brown, also an engineer,  Director Corporate Affairs Worley and council member of Worley Foundation from Melbourne Australia who sponsored the Town and Gown Mentoring /Capacity Building program gave a brief of what Worley is all about. He recognizes that engineering is ways to transform the country and provide prosperity.

Brown stated that Worley Foundation is philanthropic vehicle that has a passion for supporting STEM Education that helps women purse STEM careers, Diversity and inclusion projects that has positive impacts on its community.

Brown who also have accumulated  over 20 years of practice in  engineering shared her personal story of  her challenges to the road map of her success and concluded that as engineer you can take your career to wherever you want to. Female engineers to take calculated risk in their career.

The Keynote Speaker of the event Engr. Akinwumi Odumakinde, Managing Director of DeltaAfrik Engineering Limited (the JV partner of Worley) Challenged the young minds to consciously develop their capacity and admonished them to clearly see that through innovation, identifying good problems that are actionable and proffering solutions will determine future employment potentials. He called on all leaders and mentors to support this noble cause and let us bridge the employability gap.

The over two hundred (200) participants attended and later sub divided in a breakout session for interactive session. Some of the organisations who participated are : Adademic, Covenant University, Ota Building & Construction – Ove Arup & Partners ICT & Data Science – Cadworks Manufacturing – Diageo (Guinness) Manufacturing – Nigerian Bottling Company Oil & Gas – Shell Nigeria Exploration & Production Company Oil & Gas – Baker Hughes Oil & Gas – DeltaAfrik Engineering Telecommunications – Avanti Communications Group.
