How to Register with Institution of Engineers Rwanda

The Institution of Engineers Rwanda was established in 2008 as the apex engineering body in Rwanda with aim to promote and develop engineering services and best practice for sustainable development in the country.

Formally registered in June 2012 under the Law No. 26/2012 enacted by the parliament, it has grown in membership and influence ever since and has also been notable member of other international bodies.

Membership Classes

Honourary Membership

This is a category for non engineer who has rendered noticeable services to the institution or the profession of engineering or is eminent in engineering or in public services. A honourary member is elected by the General Assembly following nomination by the governing council.

Fellow class

  1. Has been practicing for at least 15 years
  2. Has been a corporate member for at least 7 years
  3. Has held position of such responsibility for at least 5 years in the science or practice of engineering as in the opinion of the councils justifies his or her election by General Assembly.
  4. Has provided proven leadership and services of an engineering nature to the Society.
  5. Has rendered distinguished services to the institution
  6. Is on current register of the institution of engineering
  7. A fellow of an engineering institution in Eastern Africa that has ratified the mutual recognition Agreement ates deposited at the EAC offices Arusha or any other institution that has MRA with IER.

Corporate membership class

Candidate must

  1. have obtained the degree or a Bachelor of Engineering or its equivalent awarded by a recognised University or School of Engineering
  2. Passed the technical requirements and approved by the institution ro practice as an Engineer.
  3. Has at least two years practical experience in the practice of engineering education, preferably under a Fellow or corporate Member of the institution, or under a member of another institution recognised by yhe institution through its competent authority.
  4. To maintain corporate class, they should attain the minimum allowable number of credit points in CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT assessment.
  5. Is a corporate member of an engineering institution in eastern Africa that has ratified MRA signed by Rwanda.
  6. His or her country of origin has Mutual Recognition agreement with IER.
  7. For an old foreigner who is an old professional shall only need to provide the current practicing certificates to be registered as an old professional

Graduate membership class

  1. Obtained degree of Bachelor in engineering or equivalent awarded by an old University or School of engineering an old proved for the purpose by the institution
  2. Passed the technical requirements (Technical report and interview) and approved by the institution.
  3. No person shall remain Graduate after 5 years in this class of membership

Technologist Class membership

  1. A holder of advanced diploma (A1) in technology or engineering or qualifications from a recognised programme of study for the course
  2. Has passed professional assessment conducted by the IER

Technician membership class

A holder of certificate A2 or any prior learning recognition tests in engineering from an recognised programme for the course

Passed the professional assessment conducted by the IER
