Worried by the decline in engineering practice in Nigeria occasioned by lowering of standards, eggheads in the profession have canvassed for a rebirth. To address this malady, they urged engineers in the country to come of their docility by providing solutions to myriad of the problems confronting the nation.

President, Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Babagana Mohammed, led the call at the inaugural lecture series of the Apapa branch. The event organized in Lagos was to commemorate the 19th anniversary of the branch.

Speaking at the event, which also witnessed presentation of awards to the first chairman of the branch, Chief Akintunde Zedomi, former president, Academy of Engineers, Mrs. Joana Maduka and Director of Engineering, National Theatre, Iganmu, Anele Nwogu, NSE president said engineers should brace up to the challenges in Nigeria because engineering is meant to solve problems.

Mohammed, who was represented by a council member, Oluyemi Akindeji Morakinyo, said although the present administration has good plans it needs engineers to actualize them.

He however regretted that the engineering is moving in lower level in Nigeria especially in the preparation of design work.He stressed that where engineers are cutting corners in designs, the consequence will be v very fatal.

According to him, the President Buhari has signed some laws to make the practice of engineers and engineering profession relevant, which include engineering students on national assignment must work in engineering firms but that should be followed to the latter by engineers.

He stressed that the society is working hard to change the narrative by educating members while coming up with committees to work with government to ensure that executive orders are really followed.
