APWEN Presents Scholarship prizes  to students in Abeokuta

Following the earlier award of scholarship to students at the “Invent it Build it” programme of APWEN, 10 students who won the award have been presented their prizes on Saturday 7, December 2019, in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The Scholarship sponsored by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC is one of the series of national scholarships awarded to nearly 100 girls across the 6 geopolitical zones of the country as part of the efforts to drive more girls into STEM career. It is called “Idiat Aderemi Amusu Scholarship for Girls”

The presentation ceremony was led by APWEN President, Dr Felicia Agubata at the Palace of the paramount ruler of Egbaland, HRM Oba Dr. Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, Okukenu IV, Alake of Egbaland and witnessed by many prominent citizens of the state including APWEN leadership and NSE Abeokuta delegates.

The best 10 female primary students were selected from different schools within Abeokuta metropolis during the Engr. Idiat Aderemi Amusu Engineering Scholarship Competition which was held on 16th September, 2018 at St Peter Claver Nursery & Primary School Oke Itesi, Isale Ake, Abeokuta, Ogun State. Several basic practical science experiments like Buoyancy, Solvent and absorbent, light bulb, series and parallel etc were performed by the girls from different primary schools during the competition. One of the scholarship recipients was a 9 year old Orphan.

The Scholarship which was sponsored by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) through the facilitation of Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigerian (APWEN) will cover Primary to University level and also automatic employment at NNPC after graduation to successful recipients.

The “Invent it , Build it” programme is a broad-base programme of APWEN which aimed at igniting interest of young girls in STEM careers and also drive them toward early exposure to basic practical science works. The programme is expected to stimulate and nurture their capacity to create or develop scientific or technological solutions to society challenges. The programme, whose theme is “Inspiring the Girl – Child to take up the sciences with the view to pursuing a career in Engineering” also come with scholarship award to the distinguished students to advance in their education from primary to university level. They will also be mentored by female engineers through their careers.

The Scholarship was named after the 4th President of APWEN and one of its founding members, Engr Idiat Oluremi Amusu. she is also the first female graduate of Agricultural Engineering in Nigeria.

In attendance at the ceremony are the Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, HRM Oba Dr. Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, CFR (Okukenu IV), APWEN President, Engr. Dr. Mrs. Felicia Nnenna, Egba Traditional Chiefs, Onimo Ero Agba of Egbaland and President of Abeokuta Club, Engr. Tokunbo Odebunmi, mni, Engr. Mrs. Idiat Aderemi Amusu, Deputy President, Engr. Funmilola Ojelade, Immediate Past Chairman APWEN Lagos, Engr. Laolu Aisidat, Past President APWEN, Engr. Nkechi Isigwue, APWEN Abeokuta Chairman, Engr. Mrs. Olanike Ogunbona.

Others are: the Past NSE Abeokuta Branch Chairman, Engr. M.I. Abbass, FNSE, NSE Abeokuta Branch Chairman ably represented by the General Secretary, Engr. Olumayowa Idowu, Vice Chairman APWEN Abeokuta, Engr. Mrs. T. Adegbuyi, NSE Abeokuta Publicity Secretary Engr. Ismail Adeyemi, APWEN Abeokuta Technical Secretary, Engr. T.C. Erinoso, APWEN Abeokuta Asst. General Secretary Engr. Mrs. Seun Olugbodi and Engr. Mrs. Janet Malomo

It will be recalled that, at the main edition of the programme held in 2018 in Abeokuta, the Association also showcase various role models of Female Engineers of the South West origin while some are physically on hand to inspire the new generation of girls to take up engineering and science as career of choice. The various student participants were given Souvenirs like Bags, Socks, Books, Mathematical sets etc were also given out.
