ENGR.AKANINYENE EKONG ELECTED DEPUTY NATIONAL CHAIRMAN
The Nigerian Institution of Safety Engineers has elected new National executive members at the just concluded National Conference of the Institution in Rivers State. Engr Azuka Bartholomew EMEASOBA emerged as the new National chairman, having served as the Deputy National Chairman in the past two years; while the Akwa Ibom State Chairman of the Institution, Engr. Akaninyene Ekong; was elected Deputy National Chairman.
The election which took place as part of the Annual National Conference of the institution held from October 31st to November 1st at AZNY Place, 2 Louis Drive off Abacha Road, GRA Port Harcourt, Rivers State was attended by members who came from different part of the country.
The theme of the conference is: Advancing Modern Safety Engineering Applications for Industrial and Public Safety in Nigeria.
Engr. Ekong, speaking after his emergence as the Deputy National Chairman, reassured of his commitment towards ensuring strict adherence to safety practice and enhancement of safety standard within the engineering profession.

Earlier at the conference, which lasted three days, Mr Emmanuel Okudor, MD DM-Shefield Ltd has presented the lead paper titled: “Risk Management of Liquefied Natural Gas regasification plant using Hazop study method.” while the COREN President, Engr Ali Alimasuya Rabiu along with Mr Cletus Akghibe, the president National Industrial Safety Council of Nigeria were the special guests.
The Institution also conferred Fellowship on some distinguished engineers who have contributed to the profession. Among them are: Engr Rabiu Ali -COREN President, Engr Segun Olatunji – MD Tomsey Engineering Services International Ltd, Engr Chinedu Ogwus, Senior Engineer, Total E & P and host of others.
Azuka Emeasoba (aka ABEY) was born in Yola, Adamawa State some decades ago and hails from Ozubulu in Ekwusigo LGA of Anambra State. He is an Electrical engineer by education and a Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) engineer by training. He has worked in various areas of the economy such as oil and gas, manufacturing and academics for over thirty-four (34) years with experience in manufacturing dynamics, Health, Safety & Environment management, managing people and lecturing. Engr Ekong has an MSc in Occupational Health & Safety and is a Doctoral candidate (PhD in view) in Occupational Health and Safety at the Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, University of Port Harcourt. He is a COREN Registered Engineer with experience in the Construction, Maritime and Oil/Gas industry. EngrEkong is the year 2018 recipient of the Safety Leadership Award by the Lagos State Safety Commission and AfriSAFE Professional of the year 2019 award nominee in recognition of his contributions to the development of the Nigerian Safety industry.
