2019 APWEN Conference: President Leads members on Courtesy Visit to Asagba of Asaba

On Monday, 23 September 2019, the Association of Professional women engineers of Nigeria led by the president, Engr Felicia Agubata paid courtesy visit to HRH, Asagba (Prof) Chike Edozien, GFR, GFR, JP of Asaba.

The courtesy visit was one of the events scheduled for the 2019 APWEN Conference/AGM that would hold in Asaba, Delta state all through the week.

Although the Asagba was unavoidably absent, the Association was well received by the chiefs who expressed their delight in having the association in the state. His royal majesty was represented by Iyasele of Asaba [Iyase] Chief P.I.G. Ogbeobi, the traditional prime minister of Asaba, he was the former head of service and secretary to the governor of the then Bendel state. Though the king was absent, his throne was treated and addressed as if he was present.

Other chiefs present included chief Dr. F. U. A. Joseim, Ejunwa of Asaba, Deacon Frazier Umasa the Diokpa of Umoda village, Ogweshi Sir AM Iguoho, the director of protocol to the royal majesty, Ogweshi comrade Eze Onyegwashi, Mr ACE Ocheyi, the assistant secretary to the palace and Ogweshi Patrick MC Ndele, the administrative secretary to the royal majesty.

It was mentioned that there were traditional activities on-going in the town, hence the absence of some chiefs.

Some of the members of the association on the entourage included Engr Dr Ebierin Otuaro, wife of the deputy governor of the state, Engr Chinyere Igwegwe, NSE National Executive member and National Vice Chair, Water Division, Engr. Idiat Aderemi Amusu, First female Agricultural engineer graduate in Nigeria and a former President of APWEN, Engr. Dr. Patricia Opene-Odili, Engr Nwakaego Monica Ugochukwu, Engr. Uju Okusogwu, Engr Funlola Ojelade, APWEN Vice President, Engr Bosede Oyekunle, Engr. ‘Laolu Adedapo-Aisida, APWEN Lagos Chairman, Engr Mariam Obomeghie, Chairman NSE Auchi Branch, Engr Dr Elizabeth Eteribo, Engr Alagbe Monsura, Engr and a host of others.

The traditional kolanut was broken by the representative of HRM and passed round to everyone. Engr. Agubata expatiated on what the association was about. She dwell on APWEN roles in the advocacy of the girl child to study science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

She said the association have organised of different empowerment programs such as “Invent it Build it” project in different states across the six geopolitical zones in the country.

She announced that the association will be awarding for reformational leadership to two of Asaba’s illustrious sons, the governor of Delta state, senator Ifeanyi Okowa and his deputy barrister Kingsley Otuaro.

Engr Agubata commended them for the transformation in the state, especially at the airport; she said what is obtainable at the Asaba airport can only be said to be of international standard. The conveyor belt at the airport is more functional than what is available at other states in the country.

The chiefs appreciated the association for considering Asaba as the venue for their 2019 conference, they promised to send a representative to be present at the event. They also assured the association of support for the girl child citing that they have always been progressives.

The APWEN Annual Conference is starting officially today 24th September 2019 and will last a whole week. A series of events are outlined for the period. The Theme of this year conference is: “The Dynamics of Environmental Change: Impact of Engineering.”

The event is holding at the Press Cente, Asaba, Delta State.
