Addressing the Executive Chairman and other Board members of AKROIMA during the visit, the State Chairman of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Engr. James Amiah pointed out that the courtesy call was necessitated by the fact that the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) Uyo Branch, is conscious of the synergy between the NSE and AKROIMA arising from the mandate of the Agency which is geared towards monitoring and administering of all Akwa Ibom Roads maintenance by keeping the roads in good and safe condition and linking them to the rural areas.
The engineers commended Governor Emmanuel for extending the mandate of AKROIMA beyond road maintenance, to include other infrastructural development in the state, and expressed optimism that AKROIMA would put mechanisms in place for continuous improvement of its personnel to face and surmount rising challenges of the 21st century maintenance systems through research, development and innovation.
The NSE observed with dismay, the recent devastating level of flood in Uyo and other parts of the State, and used the occasion to call on the Akwa Ibom State Government to reassign the responsibility of desilting drainages and other flood channels to AKROIMA, noting that the Agency possesses the technical and professional know-how to handle the responsibility and where necessary, could also repair, alongside desilting damaged drainages and waterways to curtail the menace of flood to the barest minimum.
They also appealed to AKROIMA to partner with the NSE in re-positioning the practice of engineering for the overall development of Akwa Ibom State, in line with the five (5) point agenda of the Udom Emmanuel’s administration. The engineers proposed that the partnership will help contribute immensely to the overall planning, execution and delivery of quality projects that fall within the purview of global best practices for the common good of the citizens and residents of Akwa Ibom State.
The professionals also used the opportunity to invite the Chairman, Board members, Directors and other officers in the Agency to their TECH-INNOVATION CONFERENCE & EXHIBITION slated to take place from 4th to 9th of August 2019, to showcase to the government, the public and private sector, the technological prowess, innovative capabilities and creativity of Akwa Ibom State engineers and their capacities to boost local content in the march towards the infrastructural rennaissance and industrial revolution of Akwa Ibom State.
In his response, the Chairman AKROIMA, Akparawa Godwin Ntuk Udeh (Ph.D) thanked the engineers for indicating their interests to partner with the Agency. He appreciated the State Governor, Mr. Udom Gabriel Emmanuel for reawakening the maintenance culture in the State and providing the enabling environment for AKROIMA to help in sustaining infrastructural development and partnering with the Nigerian Society of Engineers.
He maintained that the Agency has been up and doing to ensure zero potholes across the state, and has acquired sophisticated equipments to boost its performance, adding that as soon as the present weather condition improves, AKROIMA will begin to tackle potholes on roads across the state.
He expressed the Agency’s readiness to partner with the NSE to give premium to service delivery over personal interests.
