SITUATION REPORT OF THE COLLAPSED SINGLE CELL BOX CULVERT AT KM.32+700 MOKWA – JEBBA ROAD (KM. 173+900, TEGINA – MOKWA – JEBBA ROAD) ROUTE NO. 20 IN NIGER STATE

SITUATION REPORT OF THE COLLAPSED SINGLE CELL BOX CULVERT AT KM.32+700 MOKWA – JEBBA ROAD (KM. 173+900, TEGINA – MOKWA – JEBBA ROAD) ROUTE NO. 20 IN NIGER STATE.

Location

The Collapsed culvert is located at KM. 32 + 700 along Mokwa – Jebba Road, Route No.20 in Niger State.

The location is 1.70KM away from the newly constructed Dual Bridge at Tatabu (which has now been completed and fully opened to traffic).

Probably Cause of Collapse

The single cell box culvert outlet had been severely underscored primarily because the apron had since collapsed. The weight of articulated/ heavy duty vehicles trucking goods from the ports into the northern part of the country may have therefore further compounded the already bad situation of the box culvert .

The Collapsed Structure

The Collapsed structure is a single cell box culvert and not a bridge as widely reported in the media.

The culvert is a single cell RC Box Cukvet about 14.0 m in length. It has a 1.25m (width) by 0.90m (height) inner dimension with walls 0.20m thick.

Remediation
The FMPW&H through the Controller of Works, Niger State has carried remedial measures to ameliorate the condition of travellers and other road users.

Boulders have been used to temporarily provide access while at the same time (from physical inspection) allowing for effective flow pattern beneath road surface and around boulders of stream water.

The road has also been opened to traffic.

Actual Reconstruction Works

Actual Reconstruction Works are yet to commence. The Controller of Works was on site today as well to ascertain the level of work done so far. CCECC also visured the site from Lagos on the instruction of the Ministry.

The Controller assured that the Ministry is already working towards solving the problem.

I will keep Headquarters intimated of the progress of work.

Pictures of the location are herein included for perusal and reference.

General Submission on Condition of similar Culverts in Niger

Several Culverts in Niger State are facing the same threat as many are yet to be attended to. Some of the culverts are in worse conditions. Many of these Culverts are located along very critical inter – State and international routes some of which were included in the recent submission made by me to Headquarters with respect to 2018 Recurrent Contracts.
