The Nigerian Institute of Mechanical Engineers, Abuja Chapter, has inaugurated its recently elected Chairman, Engr Peter Ityavger Ingbiankobo and other executive members to run its affairs for the next two years.

In his inaugural speech, Engr. Igbiankobo called on his colleagues to begin to think out of the box because Nigeria with a population of over 160 million is faced with immense challenges in the areas of infrastructure and environmental sustainability

He said the new challenges should compel Nigerian mechanical engineers to continue to be more proactive in stimulating the development of the country through education, science and technology.

“The dearth of basic amenities is more profound in our dear country Nigeria with a population of over 160 million and an estimated total population of 400 million in the coming decades.

“This increase in population will no doubt lead to huge infrastructural bottlenecks in our cities, towns and villages and will pose serious challenges to us as mechanical engineers but also an opportunity for us to come together and proffer sustainable solutions to these problems,” he said.

He, therefore, promised to re-engineer the chapter by embarking aggressively on professional development and membership drive just as he pledged to liaise with the private sector and academia to offer the most innovative and efficient solutions to the problems beclouding the mechanical engineering profession.

Engr. Igbiankobo who succeeded Engr. Francis Ikechukwu Azuka noted that these lofty goals would be backed up by “a seamless direction of purpose to be guided by the core tenets of accountability and professionalism”.
