IMG 3959On the Saturday, February 17, 2018 at exactly 11 am, the National Engineering Centre, at Victoria Island will play host to dignitaries from across the country. Unlike other engineering events, this is a unique one celebrating our women in engineering at the investiture of Engr Felicia Agubata as the 15th President of the Association. She will be taking over from Engr Hauwa Muhammad Sadique who had served in the last two years.

Founded as a Pressure group by just a handful of women numbering 6 under the leadership of Engr Johanna Maduka, at a time women in engineering were considered to be best suited for office and minor works, APWEN have come a long way as the vehicle of support and professional development for the Nigerian women in engineering. Not only has the body succeeded in promoting more women in engineering but has also been intensifying efforts at getting more girls into engineering and ensuring women stays in the career.

Since its founding, women have risen to the top in various engineering sectors and had been holding enviable leadership positions while they have so integrated themselves such that the gender parity is rarely felt anymore. Now women see themselves as engineers rather than women in engineering. This had made them competitive in the profession.

The election of Engineer Joanna Maduka FNSE, FNAE as the first female President of Nigerian Academy of Engineering hold much to the progress that has been made through the years. In the last NSE National Election, three candidates aspired to contest as the Deputy President of the largest Association of Engineers in Nigeria and two of them are females. Both giving good account of themselves and making engineering proud. In the past few years, female have risen to be become Vice President of the NSE, among them are Engr. Margaret Oguntala, Engr. Kemi Adetiba, Engr Valerie Agberaba and currently, Engr. Dr. Ishidi Edith.
