Communique Issued At The 13th International Conference & Exhibition By Nigerian Institution of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (NIEEE)

The NIEEE held her yearly (13th) International Conference and Exhibtion on Power and Telecommunication (ICEPT) from 9th to 113th October, 2017. The Conference theme was ‘Sustainable Economic Development using Power and Communication’. It was declaraed open by the President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) Engr. Otis O. Anyaeji, FNSE, FAEng. The welcome address was read by the National Chairman of the NIEEE, Engr. Emmanuel Akinwole, FNSE, FNIEEE. Other dignitaries present at the event include the Deputy President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Engr. Adekunle Mokuolu, FNSE, former President of Federation of African Engineering Organization (FAEO) and Past President of the Nigeria Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Engr. .M.B Shehu, FNSE; Engr. T.S.G Wudil, FNSE, Vice-President, NSE; Engr.Josph Akinteye, FNSE, Vise-President, NSE; Engr. Mrs. Margaret Oguntala, FNSE, former Vice-President, NSE; Engr. Mrs. Valerie Agberagba, FNSE, former Vice-President, NSE; Engr. M. Bolanle Odetokun, FNSE, FNIEEE, Engr. Adekunle Makinde, FNSE, FNIEEE and Engr. Graclous Omalseye, FNSE, FNIEEE, all three being Past National Chairman of The NIEEE.

A total number of seventeen technical papers were registered and presidented during the conference covering Electric Power Systems, Engineering Economic, Engineering Entrepreneurship, Industrial Automation and Control, Power Electronics, Renewable Energy Technology and Telecommunications.

The conference identified inefficient public sector services, poorly developed ICT infrastucture, inadequate power infrastructure capacity, lowe power infrastructure capacity utilization, fragile power transmission grid and high number of power transmission system collapses, high aggregate technical and commercial losses in power distribution networks, dislapidated and obsolete power infrastructure as some of the challenges in the Electrical and Electronics Engineering industry in Nigeria and made the following recommendations:

1. Government should formulate an e-assessment strategic plan to guid the development of e-government service for enhanced efficiency in the provision of public sector services
2. Government should re-configure and strengthen the power transmission grid in order to more robust and also reduce transmission system collapses
3. The National Environmental Strandards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), Nigerian Communications Commision (NCC) and other relvant government agencies should re-evaluate standards and laws that goven electromagnetic exposure to communication masts and power lines and also stregthen monitoring and compliance in order to minimize its health effects on people.
4. Government should encourage energy-efficient behaviour amongst people and also create more awareness about the use of energy-efficiency products and services in order to reduce energy waste and losses.
5. Government should formulate policies that will accelerate the upgrade and full digitalization of Nigeria’s power sector in order to improve its performance and reliability.
6. Government should introduce incentives and implement policies that will attract investments in the countr’s power sector in order to increase power infrasturcture capacity and performance.
7. Government should grant women and yoths increased access to electricity as well as technical and vocational education in order to develop their human capacity and equip them with adequate knowledge and skills for sel-empowerment and poverty alleviation
8. Government should domesticate the country’s strategic renewable engery plan in order to enhance her overall economic and energy security.
9. Government, The NIEEE. Nigeria researchers and Engineers should collaborate to develop home-grown perpspectives on energy mix that will promote the development of Nigeria’s energy resources and protect the Nigerian economy.

Conclusion:
At the close of ICEPT 2017, all the delegates unanimously agreed that ICEPT 2018 should follow up on the success of ICEPT 2017. It was also concluded that ICEPT 2018, with theme: COMMUNICATIONS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL AND SECURITY MANAGEMENT would hold from 8th – 12th October 2018 with Port-Harcourt as the host city. Uyo was selected as the host for ICEPT 2019.

THE NIEEE’S 23RD ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING (AGM)
At the end of the international conference and Exhibition on Power and Telecommunications (ICEPT) at the same venue. The NIEEE held her 23rd Annual General Meeting (AGN) on Thursday 12th October 2017 during which a new set of Executive Committee members were elected to run the affairs of the Institution for year 2018.
